Thanks for that -and for the cracking joke (who says the old ones are the best ones?). Pain is in the hip and down into ITBs so lots of stretching and strengthening needed. Very reassuring to read all this and I'll just see how it goes over next few weeks

Gluteal tendinopathy apparently. Saw him yesterday and although it still felt very painful to me he assures me its beginning to sort itself out.... I've got Yorkshire blood flowing through my veins so also horrified to hear they charge you again if you defer. It'll be mega doses of ibuprofen and lashings of voltarol gel rather than give more cash to Richard Branson!!

That's sensible advice -thanks. I guess my problem is that I'm already stressing about losing fitness. I was really confident about starting my training from a much better base this time and now that isn't going to happen. I also know myself well enough to suspect that as soon as the physio gives me the green light I'll be off for a 10 miler.... which is why I 'm wondering if a decision to defer might be more sensible!!

Hi All,

I got a place in the VLM ballot much to my delight and was raring to go having taken 8 minutes off my 10 mile and half marathon pb in November. But since then I've been plagued by injury - calf tear and now gluteal injury all of which means I haven't run for a month. Can't really do any exercise at all at the moment as even swimming, cycling and walking are straining the gluteal problem. Seeing physio and no idea yet when I'm likely to get the go ahead to start running again. But my question is whether or not to try for the marathon even if I can get back on the road on January? I'll have to build my miles up gradually either way and my ace plan at starting 2010 from a good base of 35 miles per week with 15 mile long run has been completely blown apart. I have done a couple of slow marathons but was really hoping to do this one a bit faster (4h30, I'm not exactly speedy gonzalez!) but am feeling pretty pessimistic about my chances. Any advice from any one who has been or is in a similar situation?
