The Perfect Distance: Ovett and Coe - The Record Breaking Rivalry by Pat Butcher
Posted: 11/06/10
'Their story until the tape of Los Angeles Olympic 1500m in 1984'
Strengths:
Well researched, gives an insight into the two biggest stars of world athletics from 1979 - 84.
Weaknesses:
Some of it I already knew from previous publications,.
Overall:
A great read. It takes the reader back to the Coe Ovett era. They were the two biggest names in athletics and possibly sport itself. Their rivalry split Britain. They ushered in a new era in athletics.Athletes trust funds were set up and 'legalised'.
ITV devoted 2 hours to athletics when they took over the domestic Britsh TV athletics contract in the summer of 1985 !
