Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes

'OVER HYPED'

Strengths:
Not many, yeah people can do extraordinary things but there are better ultra runners than Dean Karnazes.

Weaknesses:
Self indulgent, ego the size of a planet

Overall:
poor, Tim Tweitmeyer is a far more inspirational ultra runner but doesn't feel the need to crow like this. In short Karnazes beleives in his own hype, yes he's good but there are many better Scott Jurek etc

Garmin Forerunner 405

'BETTER THAN THE 305 BUT NOT PERFECT'

Strengths:
Quick to track satellites
Can be worn down the pub

Weaknesses:
Cant give you a position in latitude and longitude
Garmin Connect is slow
had problems uploading when operting windows Vista but not XP

[Update 08/09/09] BEZEL HATES SWEAT

Bezel hates sweat, have to lock bezel otherwise damn thing beeps, jumps screens and generally annoys the hell out of me

Overall:
Overall pretty good, like the scrolling screens and the small size though if displaying three lines of info at once two of them are prety small if you don't have perfect eyesight.

Clip for charger broke after three weeks, all in all though my Suunuto X9 is better.

'EXCELLENT BETTER THAN THE TRIUMPH 4 WHICH WAS EXCELLENT '

Strengths:
Well cushioned, keep feet cool, dont let as much sand in as the Triumph 4 (Well I do live in Dubai and running across sand is a occupational hazard) Wide toe box is excellent for me

Weaknesses:
Not that durable, I get about 350 miles from a pair against 500 from a Nimbus but they are cheaper

Overall:
A well cushioned trainer suitable for banging out the miles, wouldn't race in them too heavy. saucony the most underated running shoe company!

Saucony Grid Fastwitch 2

'FAST & FURIOUS!'

Strengths:
Lightweight but with some support, quite durable. Feels like you flying after wearing my normal Saucony Triumph trainers.

Weaknesses:
Not for over the 15K mark (for me).

Overall:
Good Value like most Saucony shoes, light weight with enough support for 10K racing. I know guys who run marathons in these but not me! Feel lighter and faster than my old Asic racers.

'GOOD BUT NEED TO BE BROKEN IN'

Strengths:
Plush, cushioned, they handled a 40 mile run no bother.

Weaknesses:
Took at least 50 miles to bed down.Little slippery in the wet

Overall:
Very Very good a big step forward from the Triumph 3 and I prefere them to the Asics Nimbus. Dirt cheap in Dubai!

[Update 06/06/07] On my second pair now (at 40 pounds a pair why not!). Tread has a tendancy to pick up stones and their not that long lasting. I went through the heel rubbers in about 350 miles. These are minor gripes though they are a very comfortable cushioned shoe once you have got about 50 miles in them.

'LOVE IT'

Strengths:
Light weight but easily supportive enough for Marathon Running. Switched from Nike Pegasus and this show is much better. Wears well too

Weaknesses:
None that I have found

Brilliant

[Update 06/06/07] I ran a 56K ultra in mine, they don't have enough support for that kind of distance but great up to marathon distance.

'GREAT IF YOUR STUCK IN THE OUTBACK!'

Strengths:
Many! Able to store routes, give bearings to next waypoint, record speed and distance, keep a wary eye on the weather

Weaknesses:
No Heart rate data

Overall:
A superb bit of kit but not really for running, unless your adventure racing in the widerness when the Navigation aspects really come into play.

Nike Air Zoom Vomero 2

'TOE BOKK WAY TO NARROW, '

Strengths:
Very well cushioned

Weaknesses:
Toe box is too narrow for me, I get hot spots on the balls of my feet after 20 mins running. The shoe comes with "sock liner" i.e no seperate tongue and therefore if you have high arches or wide feet it doesn't matter how much you loosen the laces their still overly tight.

Overall:
Well cushioned, perhaps too much in the forefoot. I find them hard to run quickly in as the toe off phase of my stride feels all wrong in these shoes due to all the cushioning. Back to Asics Nimbus for me. Their also expensive
