Reading Half Marathon 2013

Posted: 21/01/2013 at 16:57

I'm in too!  I am fairly new to running, but having lost a load of weight over the last 18 months I am now hooked on it and its getting me through a plateau as well as toning me up and getting me fit!

I decided to enter the Reading Half because I wanted something big to focus on and aim for. I have done a couple of 5k races and recently discovered ParkRun too which I loved. I am doing Reading as a golden bond place with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research as my Mum had Lymphoma cancer twice and is currently in remission again.

I have no idea what time I am aiming for, and may have to walk a little of it, but I am not really bothered as I am just doing it for the personal achievement of running a half and for the charity. I did put my 5k time into the race calculator weeks ago and it gave me a predicted time just under 3 hours!!! But since I did that last 5k I have reduced my walks and increased my running time so I think that a time of somewhere between 2hr30min and 2hr45min will do for me! I am currently following a BUPA half marathon training plan and its going really well. I can feel improvement almost every week and as I keep a running diary now I can look back and see my times improving

Hope to see some of you there... I'll be one of the ones in a bright yellow LLR running vest

Hi all... can I join in? I have lost 36lbs over the last 18 months but still have 28lbs to go to get to my ideal running weight. Now that I am running (2 or 3 months so far) I am hoping it will help me tone as I slim

I did my first ParkRun on Saturday and loved it! Time was 40:48 but I wasn't last - there were 6 after me - and thats now my time to work on beating each week as I get fitter!

I also gave up smoking 2 days ago (yay me!) and already noticed my breathing easier on today's run

Vix - well done you on day 3 smoke free awesome effort!!

Yep, ParkRun was brilliant, I totally loved it and I will be back there again next week! I managed to meet a couple of people from the local running club too so might even join them on Tuesday evening as they train at the park on Tuesdays at their own pace so I won't be worried about holding people up like I would out on a group road run. Its all good

How do you know your race pace?

Thanks Stevie & Jamie.

I put in my most recent 5k time and the estimated time it gave me for a half marathon was close to what I am hoping for when I do the Reading Half in March, so it looks like a fairly good calculator..

Wow thanks everyone for the support, comments and advice!

Vix - well done too! We can do this!

Being totally honest, I had a shitbags day at work today so I did cave in and nick a couple from a colleague, but other than that I am enjoying my first day of trying to quit.

Tomorrow I am doing my first parkRun with a friend who is a marathon runner, and she has kindly said she will slow down and stick with me as I trot around the course! If she is willing to do that for me, then I am going to slap on my patch in the morning and aim to have a very happy and relaxed day without the need of a fix!

Have a great weekend everyone, I know I am going to

Thanks all

I got my patches today so will be slapping one on in the morning and hoping it works! I feel positive, and TBH I am so busy at work this week playing catch up after the xmas break that I won't have time for a fag break anyway

Muttley... rowing machine is up on its end in the corner at the mo due to the annual xmas tree furniture shuffle, but it will be back out and in use again soon
