My #asics262 Journey to Paris: Sub-5 Gareth

Hi Gareth,

I would think wondering how you will manage 26.2 is pretty much par for the course.  When I did my first marathon last year I can recall wondering where the other miles would come from whenever I completed a long run... but they came.  I reckon its all a building process and by the time of the marathon, with the miles in your legs and some freshness due to the tapering you will have the stamina to manage it.  Trust your coach and the schedule, keep doing the miles and enjoy the challenge - it isn't supposed to be easy or everyone would be doing it

Nice to meet you too this morning Malcs... sorry I couldn't stick around after and have a coffee with you and your entourage.  Sadly Xmas break finished at midday so I had to leave soon after the finish to get ready for work.

Gareth - I bought my roller back in July 2010 and there is no difference in the shape to the day I got it.

What's the advantage of a trigger point roller?  I bought one of the bog standard blue rollers like this one

a couple of years back.  Been a superb purchase and has helped loads with various aches and knots etc but can't help wondering what you get for paying an extra £26 (other than overdraft charges)?

Difficult to justify a 120 mile round trip with 5 parkruns so close.  I only managed to get to Cardiff Parkrun twice (80 mile round trip) before Llyn Lech started - a 13 mile round trip for me

Hi Malcs - we've spoken on Gareth's forum but I'm following yours with interest too as I'm hoping to challenge 3:30 for my Spring marathon although I'm targeting Worcester so will be about 3 weeks behind you in terms of schedule.

Will hopefully have chance to say hello face to face at the Llyn Lech Owain parkrun on the 28th - be good to see some more new faces there.  It's an excellent trail run, 2 laps with a nice uphill climb to enjoy... although the section through the woods might be a bit heavy with all the rain were enjoying at present!!  I will be doing the Xmas Day run there too.

Definitely think your wimping out though as this "wind" is merely a stiff breeze for Llanelli and South Wales

Yeah I know which is yours Gareth... but seriously do you really want someone dayglo orange clad idiot knocking on the door at 11pm asking if you fancy a run??

If your looking for a decent half marathon in early March, the Llanelli Waterside Half is a good one.  Dunno if you did it last year but it starts and finishes at Parc Y Scarlets and is a good, flat route too.

I went out for a run at 10:45 last night - by the time I ran passed your house Gareth the rain had cleared as had some of the clouds and it was a dry, moonlit, starry night.  Never ran that late before but converting for 5 night shifts in the run up to Xmas - decided its a lovely time to run!

You mentioning Bath Half reminded me of a question I was going to ask you Gareth.  Has your coach specified any races as part of your training?

I'd offer you a lift up to the Parkrun on the 28th but I've gotta be away sharpish as I start work at midday that day.  My next few shifts after this Saturday have fallen nicely tho so I will also be at Llyn Lech Owain on Xmas Day, New Years Day and the 4th Jan.  Will also be marshalling on the 11th Jan as I want a rest day before the West Glam XC on the 12th.... hope to see you there on at least one of those!

Don't back down Sam... Make him train on Xmas Day!!!  If I can go and run the local Parkrun at Llyn Lech Owain I expect to see him out on the road slogging through a tough 'un as I drive back thru the village to face my family
