Paris marathon 2013 here we go! A.W's Sub 3 attempt!

Posted: 22/03/2013 at 10:35

I am running the London this year and am currently on 50-65 miles a week doing the usual key sessions (mile reps, tempo, MP runs and long runs). My total program this year will be 11 weeks (including the taper) so pretty tight and coming off limited base work (26 mpw average).

Without a taper I did 2:24 a few weeks ago at the Surrey Spitfire 20 miler. The idea was to do a MP + 30 secs run. I am also running the Hyde Park 24 miler this Sunday and wanted some advice about what pace to aim for? Same again?

If I can do the 24 miler at mp+30 and perhaps 12-18 miles at MP on a track next week as part of a long run, is sub three a realsitic goal to aim for this year?

PB's are Half Marathon (April'11): 82 mins, 20 Miles (April,'12): 2h 12mins,  Marathon: (Shakespeare marathon '11) 3h 2mins

I have done it before on the tread but I just wonder what an ideal mp long run is at this point. I think Horwill's idea might be abit overkill.

Thoughts about 18 miles at mp on the treadmill on Sunday 6 weeks out of VLM?

90 mins @ 6:45 pace last night albeit on the treadmill. Feels good to get some MP work in.

Thanks LJ. Totally agree with Andy D on your PB. Awesome!

Did the Surrey Spitfire 20 miler @ 7:17's in the end to come in at around 2 hours 24. Felt relatively comfortable and tried to throttle back. Not quite ready for MP pace yet.

I am doing the Surrey Spitfire 20 miler on the weekend and wanted to get some opinions about what time would indicate that I am in sub three shape without a taper. My PB for the distance (with taper) is 2:12 (but that was at Worthing last year). I am currently on 50 mpw and doing one speed session per week and a long run but only started training properly again three weeks ago. Sub 2:20?

Anyone got any advice about wind running?

Looks like the first half of the course will be very fast and last half hellish! Didn't quite get 3hrs last year (3h 02). Looks like this year will be another battle.

 Thanks for the response.

Yes, I agree I think. For confidence I want to try 20 @ mp but I am not sure if the bens will kick in within two weeks?

As for the beetroot juice, I am giving that a go too! I can't find it any cheaper anywhere either and I think mine is from concentrate. Do you know much are you meant to drink a day for the nitrates to help?

 Thanks again.

I am striving for sub 3 at the Stratford Marathon this year after getting 3h02mins last year. Training has gone well up untill last week. I recently ran 2h12mins at the Worthing 20 miler which was 7 weeks out from the race. Week 6 went as planned but the week before last I had six straight days off due to illness. My question I taper differently as I feel fresh due to the lay off or do I keep the same plan?

Weekly mileage below (sporadic I know) for the weeks since the 20 mile race and my totals until the race. I normally do the usual 5km/10km  pace interval sessions of a marathoner mid week. All comments welcome

Week 6: 65

Week 5: 14 (then got ill for six days)

Week 4: 46

Week 3 (this week): thinking of going back up to 60 and getting my last fast long run in this week due to lay off.

 Week 2: 38

Race week: 16+race.
