Apocalypse 100

Posted: 28/04/2014 at 19:50

I went from 50 to 100 and here are a few things I found out.

Not accepting a seat at checkpoints and staying on your feet I think helped, you'll spend enough time sitting down in the weeks after the race anyway.

Sort out foot problems immediately no matter how small.

visualise yourself crossing the finish line beforehand and flowing through checkpoints efficiently. Its easy to waste loads of time here, I picked up food and ate on the go at all but the halfway one, here I spent 15 mins eating a hot meal (standing up).

Think positively, each step is taking you closer to the finish etc.

Encouraging text messages in the middle of the night made a big difference to me, I was alone for 60 miles apart from checkpoint staff so it was nice to have some contact!

You can't guarantee where your highs and lows will happen, my low was at dawn and lasted a few hours. The only guarantee is that things will get better (although you may have to go a bit lower first! sorry).

I will see some of the 100 milers as they pass my house at Presthope on Wenlock Edge, not sure if I will see the 50ers but I may try to get over.

I read that ultras are 40 per cent physical and 60 per cent mental and I would agree with this so as long as you have done the training you have just got to sort your head out!

Good luck everyone and enjoy the experience

The Wenlock Olympian Society Marathon

I can confirm, it's a different route and different organisers this year. I can't confirm the route details as I am not involved but I believe it is a mix of road and trails.

Good running last Saturday Daniel, Well done!

unfortunately i bombed out at Acton Scott having emptied the contents of my stomach along the southern end of Wenlock Edge!

From the sounds of it you and Andy? ran the whole route together, you obviously managed to keep generally on track after we split.

Again, congratulations may see you on other ultras in the future

Chris

Does everyone carry water while running in this heat?

I don't normally bother taking any for runs of under 2 hours as I end having to nip into the bushes all the time but in this heat I wouldn't want to do much over an hour without any.

Hi, are you doing the full or half?

fewer than last year unfortunately, not sure why, maybe due to Shrewsbury Marathon and half last weekend or maybe last year killed a lot off!

looking at about 60 on the full and 80 on the half although we usually get quite a few late entries. It is still a new event so I'm sure that numbers will rise in future. Unless something terrible happens to the weather between now and then it's going to be a lovely run. I have been out strimming on the route and its in a really good condition and there are loads of wildflowers. Wish I was able to run it!

look forward to seeing you at the start
