Interval training - proper running?

Posted: 06/01/2013 at 17:33
So I started back running a few months ago and I'm really enjoying it. I get out 2-3 times a week and also mix it up with strength training at the gym. Because I was starting from scratch again I started of running 2 mins / walking 1 min over a mile or 2. I've built it up to running 4 mins & walking 1 min up over 5 miles. Whenever I try to run without stopping I struggle to get past about 2 miles. I find that by taking a minute to get my breath back that I can go further, faster and last longer. My question is: is this proper running? There seems to be a stigma about running where if you stop then it doesn't count. Personally I'm quite happy doing what I do, just wondered what everyone else's thoughts are?

Hi John,

I'm in a similar situation, and have also entered for Manchester.

I'm not sure on the shin splints issue, but I did start training with a personal trainer and one of the big things we looked at was nutrition. Ridiculous as it sounds the thing that has made the biggest difference for me was drinking much more water. I used to drink a lot of fizzy drinks but I've cut them all out and now drink around 3ltrs of water a day - the difference is amazing.

Might be a good place to start?

Hi All,

I've just started running again in the last couple om months having done nothing for the last couple of years.

I decided to enter Manchester 10k to have something to aim for, and then persuaded almost 20 work colleagues to enter as well and decided to run for charity to make sure I didn't pull out!!!

Been doing a lot of interval training and recently got up to 8k, but as soon as I try to run any kind of distance without stopping it seems to fall apart - I went out tonight and only did 3.5 k but had to slow to a walk twice. Not sure if it's a psychological thing or if I've just conditioned my body to stopping & starting. It's not a massive problem to be honest, but if anyone's got any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to hearing how everyone else is getting on
