Shoes, did I make a mistake?

Having my gait analysed (two different places) helped my running and stopped my injuries completely. I guess all the top/elite athletes who have seen improvements using gait analysis wasted their time?

In my case I believed a salesman who 'looked' at my feet and sold me the completely wrong shoe - even though it fit well and felt comfortable. I then went through weeks of pain and injuries.

I now wear completely different style of shoe and run faster and injury free.

I don't think you have been ripped off - certainly not the prices Sports Direct charge. Sports Direct operate by selling low end/model shoes, or models that are 'end of life'.

For a beginner doing a 5k almost any shoe would do. I once ran a 10k in a Rockport dress shoes to show how comfortable they were.

If you are serious about running you more than often get what you pay for. I like many other regular runners would not buy from Sports Direct, but a 'real' running shop. It's also worthwhile (again if you are serious) to get your running gait analysed by the shop.

Personally after my weekly LS run (normally about 8 miles) on Sunday, I would not do any 'real' exercise on Monday. A walk of about 3 miles and some stretching/Yoga is my noraml Monday routine.

I'm 57yr old - I'm led to believe the older one gets, the more important rest is.

Get a training partner, or join a club. Also have your running 'technique' analysed if you can.

Being an oldie, I wnet from a 12 min/mile to a 10:30min/mile for my marathon pace using the above.

chest pains when running outside

It's extremely difficult to diagnose such conditions on a forum. What I would say is visit your doctor. Any kind of chest pain while running should be thoroughly investigated.

Have you run a 10k before. If so, what time? Also depends how old you are - speed leaves you as you get older.

Final week before great south run

It takes 2 or more weeks for your 'fitness edge' to start diminishing. Don't do anything hard in the week before a race. Your last long/hard run should be about 3 weeks before any race/event.

Short, gently, slow, or a bit of tempo work. Walking, cycling, swimming - nothing too taxing. Add a bit of stretching, etc.

Never heard of them, but they look colourful. I notice the prices are in Euros. If you are in the UK, then I would consider shoes that are widely available in the UK - so you can try them on.

It's OK buying from the web once you have found a size and brand that works.

other sport to improve running

Assuming you are doing different types of running i.e. tempo, sprints, long and slow.... then plenty of other sports will help.

Cycling, swimming, strength, gym work come to mind, but others (including team sports) are also good and increasing general fitness. 

To be more precise, we need to know what type or running you do.

You kinda answered you own question. Start off slower. Do you have a sports watch you can program with a pace you can run to?
