LLB, i started using a coach last year to help me get to marathon and Then through the other 8 halfs i did last year. I'm one of those people who trains better if i know someone is holding me accountable. He has pushed me to do things i wouldnt have done. Not expensive, and definitely worth it.

Oh no, speed sessions are my least fave runs. Don't mind hills, and love lsr's. Especially on a quiet winter morning, out before sun up, watch it rise over the gas works, home in time for bath and lunch. Although methinks that training for an ultra will be more like home in time for a bath and supper!!

I understand all of what you say. I am currently reading Bryon Powell's book "Relentless forward progress" and will also be getting a proper coach.
I didnt mean to sound cocky or anything earlier, just trying to say that if my natural ability is endurance type runs then maybe thsts what i should try. I do not expect to win, or even come close to winning these events, but i do think i will enjoy them more.
I am willing to take on board any hints tips and advice you can give

Loukabell, i've been around a while but not on forums for some time. I have dipped my toe in and out of the ultra idea for a while but am now finally commiting to one. I have discovered that my natural running stule is sliw and long so it makes sense to do that sort of race rather than keep coming last in 5 & 10k's.
