Expecting to finish

Posted: 17/09/2014 at 16:29

what cougie said - if you're expecting to DNF you obviously haven't trained properly
that said, if it's a mega-long one that you haven't done before, you can't know exactly how it's going to go, so there's always a bit of a frisson on the start line - i.e. be nervous, but not scared witless

the only race I've ever been scared at the start of was the Kielder Borderer a few years ago, but that was because I was completely unfamiliar with the area and there was snow on the ground and the clag was down (and there were only 30-odd entrants and they all had north-east accents except me)

Padfield Plum Fair Scamper on Sunday:
civilised start time (1:15pm)
not too long (5.5M)
not too hilly (just up/down Glossop Low)
ideal methinks for the week after BS

what to wear?

it is a common misconception that all baselayers are somehow "thermal" or "insulating" THIS IS NOT THE CASE - "heatgear" type baselayers keep you COOLER THAN SKIN by wicking the sweat away from your skin and providing a greater surface area for the sweat to evaporate.

I actually very rarely wear tights (has to be massively sub-zero), but always lycra shorts

I find base layers essential for runs longer than about 40 mins, mainly to stop chafing (inner thighs, underarms and nipples), but a decent quality technical baselayer is just better than skin full stop: keeps you cool in hot weather and warm in cold; acts as sunblock, stops insects, gives you something to wipe your sweaty brow on (if long-sleeved), stops that horrible "dribbling sweat" effect, can also be compressive, so get extra benefits that way (reduces muscle soreness, increases proprioception) etc etc...

Wow! Look at that top 7! Congrats to all, some special achievements there

I had a remarkably good run, feeling pretty good all the way round and sticking like glue to my 14:29 schedule (never being more that 4 minutes either up or down on it  ) and clocking 14:28 at the finish - somebody said I'd finished 40th which, if confirmed, I would be well chuffed with.
Highlights included the sunset (as I was moving between Fivewells ridge and Chelmorton), the SuperMoon lighting the way and topping out Macc Forest seeing the lights of Greater Manchester laid out ahead like a giant glittering golden lake
