Holidays - To run or not to run?

Take two suitcases with you and pack one shoe in each case, then if both your cases arrive at your destination you can go for a run. If not problem solved!

One hamstring tighter than the other...

Posted: 21/06/2013 at 20:06

I had a tight hamstring on and off for years. I finally cured it by making sure my glutes and piriformis were both stretched and strengthened. Doing this put everything back in its proper place and took pressure off a nerve that was causing the sensation of tightness. I couldn't do a straight leg swing above waist height without fear of falling over. Now a leg swing at head height is no problem. The best stretch I found, which you can see all over t'internet is often called the figure 4 ie sit on a chair with the ankle of the injured leg on top of the knee of the other leg. With a straight back lean forward feeling the stretch through the glute. Morning and evening for a couple of weeks should see a big improvement. As for strengthening I used Pilates exercises mainly single leg squats 3 x 12 each day.

Mizuno Wave Inspire 9

I'm a 50 something, 70 kg, 6ft, male, over pronating, midfoot striker. For years I've run in Nike equalons which  are no longer available. I run on tarmac country lanes, woodland trails and grass upto about 30 mpw.  I've tried Mizuno Inspire 9's on in the shop and they feel ok but there's nothing like getting the opinion of someone who's done a fair few miles out in the real world. So if anyone out there has an opinion on them particularly if your style and mileage is similar to mine I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

Patella strengthening exercises?

Posted: 28/05/2013 at 18:42

I do dozens of both squals and lunges per week to keep me running true including keeping the patellas where they should be. One exercise I found particularly useful is the single leg squat i.e. without shoes balance on one foot and then squat down as far as comfortable and push back up to standing. Repeat for 12 without letting the raised foot touch the floor at any time. 3 x 12 three times a week does me fine.
