From 10k to 60metres

Thanks Mr D, once again nice and positive. I have entered the Joe Moran T&F Meeting in june to run the 100m and training seems to have moved up a notch somewhat! I now have a hill sprint session (2x5 10secs) and also a step session that is very hard. My coach assures me this torture will be good for me. Just read an article about Ussain Bolt challenging a distance runner in a 10k...Bolt was knackered! All due to fast and slow twitch fibres, I know very little about this but understood that you inherit these fibres but can grow one or the other more?? As I was never the speediest of distance runners but did well over shorter distances at school I presume I have the fast?? Hope so! I know its earlydays but as you said, feels quite obvious and also the old regrets..why oh why did I not just do this from the start! Getting timed on my 100 on Tuesday..scared isn't the word! Hope you are fit and well Mr D.

Thankyou Mr D, Although I realise many people must have gone through this change I havn't heard many mention it! Well done on your sub 18 btw! Yes, I actually feel as if I have found where I want to be. I was never a speedy distance runner neither ( have been running since 2010, plus 6 months off due to my injury) and have now found that after around 5 miles my leg aches and as I loked ddown I noticed that my foof was tuning inwards whereas it hadn't before the fracture. I was also left to walk and run a couple of miles on it before the cast went on as it was at first diagnosed as a sprain. After a re-call to the hospital it was put in a cast for 5 weeks so I can onlu think the damage had already been done.

I tried my first sprint session at my club on Thursday night, I am definitely the oldest of the group at 51 but that keeps the pressure off for now as I know I am not going to catch the teenagers!  Session was as follows..

1 very slow lap (400m)

25 mins of drills

2 x 100m  5min rest

2 x 150m  5 min rest

2 x 120m  5 min rest

2x 80m  then 2 very slow laps.

Whole session lasts around 90mins felt great, loved the little bursts of speed and thought..wow, this is easy! How very silly I was!! The next day could barely walk, lift my arms above my shoulders or sit down..and when I did, got up like a woman of around a hundred

Enjoyed it though! Got another tomorrow night (Tue) and 10 hill sprints on Sunday with warm up and cool down jogs. That's it so far...

Hi everyone, After loads of heart searching, pain and disapointment I have decided I can no longer do the distance. 1 year ago I fractured the tip of my left fibular doing a 10k through some woodland. Its took me a whole year to realise that to carry on running I must do short. Less impact but more power, less milage but more hills and less training but more pain (in a good way )  Just wondered if anyone else has gone through this change of direction and any advice would be welcomed. Currently training with teenagers and a sprinter friend at weekends to run the 60m. Cheers guys!

Is interval training the best way to get my speed up? I started running two and a half years ago. My best pace is 9.47 min miles. Time out from March 2012 -June 2012 due to a fractured fibula (tree root whilst running through woods) Had birsitis for around 3 months now but it feels like it is going. I would really love to be able to do an easy run, say 5 to 6 miles at 9min miles. Currently train as follows.

Monday  Rest

Tuesday 5ish miles including hills

Wednesday  3.2 easy @ 10.25

Thursday  30min track session, intervals plus 800m warm up + 800m cool down

Friday  Rest

Saturday  3.2 half uphill half down

Sunday Just got back to 7miles flat and slow. Will be doing up to 10

Bursitis

Thanks guys, yes it seems that the treatment for this condition does not vary, which is good and also the answer I was looking for. My anti-inflams off the doc have really irritated my stomach and as soon as I swopped for the everyday, off the shelf ibuprofen it calmed down. Last two runs have been pain free, but as it is a creeping  ache and not a sharp pain I was sort of waiting for it to start, I was also surprised that it did not come! I have ran 5 day out of 7 for the last two weeks and have found that splitting my mileage up into smaller sections has also helped. Probably lost some endurance but will my overall fitness stay the same. Runs are between 4 and 6 miles, 5 times per week?

Bursitis

I broke my leg in March and started training again in May 2012. The last couple of months has been painfull to run due to a contition called bursitis (inflamation of the fluid sack on the hip) I think, as it is on my right hip and I broke my left I presume it is through over compensating when resuming training. Has anyone had anything similar? Any advice or comments welcome.

B2B! So your sandals are working out are they? They sound great, do you have to be perfectly neutral to be able to wear them? Got some asics bandido's in the sale and they are the best thing since sliced bread! Only made of net so when worn without socks you get a lovely breeze through them! Also have a bit of support in them, maybe try them 3.30? Really fancy those sandals though B2B!  Not that steady yet though, keep overcompensating on the longer runs (gonna try 7m tomorrow) But I think its just a temporary thing. Does anyone know of any nice flat 5k's around York or Lincoln?? I know...quite random but I can't find any?

Hi guys! Is there a few peeps missing these days? You all sound like you have made really good progress. As for me, my leg is really healed  now, just a twinging tendon left complaining..only seems to do so after a hard session which is sod's law because to improve I need to do the hard sessions.  Got myself a new pb last week..well..new after injury, did my first 5k race since end of Feb and got 29.03...grrrr..3! Get rid of that next week I promise then at least im in the 28's haha! REally struggling with my breathing also but I also know that it will return so not too glum. Anyone got any news on Sue?? Anyway off to do my hill session now in a nice sunny park! As always, HAPPY RUNNING

Hi all, hope all is well with you all

Wow, beachball, great time, would be happy to get my 10k time down to 10mins slower that that!!

Set off to do a 10k trail-ish run this morning, got a terrible stitch in my side after 20 or so mins so after another couple I turned around( the run is an out and back anyway) and was surprised to find that I had done 5miles in 49mins..  Got my first race of the summer next week, a flat 7k with just one brutal little hill right at the end! As some of you know I had to give my summer races away after the first disasterous one in early March did it in 44mins 2years ago as a beginner.

B2B Sounds like you are coming on in leaps and bounds( literally) !!
