Are ultra runners fast or plodders?

What GKD said.

I agree with seren nos, start now to get more miles or kms per week and build up the amount of time on your feet. That will make the endurance part so much easier to cover. Although you perhaps love the gym I'd say the treadmill isn't the same as running outdoors.

This could be a Major occasion in your family's life If you choose to go ahead with it.

I wish you every success if you decide YES!

Lorna, I am sorry to hear about the diagnosis.

i would suggest that not being able to run fast need not be important.

As well as knowing what event you're looking to do it could be helpful to know what running you have done.

You say you've not done a marathon, so have you run any races? What distances do you run, per week and per month (on average)?

I'm hopeful that you will get good advice on here to help you with your plans. Already you've got GKD and Cougie!

Good on ya DEot. I've not been to Spurn Point but had an interest in birdwatching many years ago & thought of it. You've really put yourself throught the mill with this challenge. I can only imagine how thrilled your mum would be.

im sure life won't be empty as you have your young son to help make it full, but as you say motivation for the mundane may well be affected. Good Luck to you.

HI Adam. Do you know of the Round Chesterfield Walk route? It passes through Brimington. The section from Brim to Unstone is 6 miles and Brim to Heath is 7 miles. if you get fed up with the out & back routes you could create your own circular route. Perhaps to Brim Common then Tapton & the canal & back to home? Going towards Unstone you're near New Whit then The Handleys & Hundall.

I understand about the sameness of going to Rother Valley CP as I've done that many a time. Maybe turn off for Poolsbrook Country Park, & even Duckmanton & Poolsbrook before heading back on the Trans Pennine Trail.

it won't all be forest paths of course but there several wooded areas in the routes above.

Enjoy the search when you do explore.

Okay Adam. So can you give some idea of whereabouts in Chesterfield you would run or start from?

Hi Adam. I'm on the other side of town from Chimney. Linacre Reservoirs offers some trails & you can public footpaths marked on OS maps to extend your runs. The Chesterfield Canal path goes out to Rother Valley Country Park. That's if you're okay with an out & back route. There's plenty of fields in the areas of Wingerworth & Holymoor side  but I suppose it depends where you'd like to start & finish.

Using shorter races as training runs

I don't enter many races, on or off road!

I do think this is a great suggestion though. Without any specific examples, I do think you submit a good deal of sense on here.

I look forward to seeing the views of others on this thread.

Thanks for the RR mention. I did consider it before the change from December. A lot of muddy fields plus some of the route sounds unappealing. I don't race much anyway so we'll see.

All the Best to you for the rest of the year.
