Want to buy a good running hat + gloves for running in Scotland (colder than I'm used to in the South!) for my daughter.  Looking at either the Nike range or Ronhill do one with a pink (therefore girly) trim.  Any ladies got suggestions for good ones that are comfy and warm?  I just use whatever comes to hand!!

advice needed for half marathon training

Posted: 04/12/2009 at 16:55

Am doing my 4th half marathon in edinburgh at end of April.  Usually have my training worked out well but this time I'll be in Australia for a month from late feb to late march so will have just 4 wks when I get back to do my longer runs.

Really not good running in the heat and the most I'm expecting to do in oz is 5/6 miles.  Is it worth doing some longer runs before I go in Feb (can't  really see this will help so far in advance) or just do regular 5/6 miles over there and pump out the miles when I get back?

I'm a 'senior' so not looking for pb's just enjoy the race and get to the end without walking!!

What to wear

How about a vest top with a lightweight long sleeved one over the top?  You can take this off and tie round your waist when you warm up - I did this on a warm half marathon on Sunday and it was fine, not at all cumbersome.  Edinburgh tends to be a bit windy and chilly! Good luck

Ah matt, you must have been one of those speedy youngsters that went wooshing past me! Thank you for the comments - makes me feel much better.

Well, my legs are still buzzing - going to do a very gentle 2/3 miles tomorrow to see how it feels.  Very short I'm guessing!  Going to try and do at least one 8 miler a week to keep up the fitness but I always say that and unless I have a race booked am a bit too easily put off.  I blame it on age!

Am thinking about putting away my winter gear and getting the shorts out or do you think that would be tempting fate.

Have four weeks and we're off to oz for a month so am looking forward to running some new routes out there.  Don't do well in the heat however so not sure - in fact thinking about it, don't do well with hills, heat, wind - o.k with rain though!!

Well done everyone.  It was a brilliant day wasn't it?  Thought the organisation good, crowds - especially in blackmore - really encouraging, weather glorious - hill at end not needed!  Traffic not as bad as I thought it was going to be having never done a hm with traffic.  I kept overtaking the same people walk/running so they must have been sprinting past me at some point!

I did 2.15 which was a pb - was hoping to do 2.11 and was 2 mins under that until about mile 9 (not sure about that) and then obviously lost the plot!  My daughter did 2.02 with a pulled knee muscle from mile 12 - she was gutted as well as in pain as was hoping to crack the 2 hrs.  However, good time nevertheless.  Always something to aim for!

We're doing the asics 10k in July in London and hopefully the Royal Parks hm in October.  So, speed training for me till July!

Well done again - its such a buzz at the end isn't it.

Time to call it a day on Half Marathons???

I was thrilled to get 2.15 at my last half marathon but I am 57 and don't like 'feeling the pain'.  Purple Peril PLEASE don't tell me you're older!!

Keep on doing them - just put it down to a bad one as everyone suggests.

Spag bol for me too + choc pudding!  Jelly babies plus sports drink ready and waiting for tomorrow morning although might ditch the jelly babies - very small pocket = sticky jelly babies! Think i'll have porridge + banana in the morning.

Good luck everyone - weather/wind looking good.  Look both ways before crossing A12 (!!)
