Flat marathon to hilly 34M in 4 weeks

Err...training? Plan?

I took 6 days off post marathon then the following weekend did 15M run walk in the Peaks. Mostly walking and stopping every 15minutes to check the map because I was on my own and wasn't sure where I was going.

Another 2 hilly run-walks in the following 2 weekends including a back to back hill run-walk and 10M run one week out from the race. Quickie 5 day taper then pulled on my trainers and went for it!

Did 6-8M midweek but over all, I think I only did 2-3 runs a week in the build up to this. The race itself was not too hilly and the terrain was very beginner friendly. Not technically difficult and I saw quite a few people do it in road shoes. We were lucky as it was totally dry. I would have easily taken me an extra hour+ if it had been a bog fest.

DONE!! It was an absolutely BRILLIANT experience and I can't wait to go again! Absolutely loved it from start to finish and it's the start of many more adventures to come.

So many funny little moments and interesting observations, it's so much less intense than marathons where I'm constantly trying to maintain pace and get it done. I could really absorb the surroundings and enjoy the race.

Thanks for all the encouragement. The dark side is flipping ace!


CTS Pembrokshire car share

Just wondering if anyone is driving to CTS Pembrokeshire and is able to give me a lift from Manchester or the North West in general? I'm hoping to travel on Friday and come back Monday but I can be flexible to suit.

I'll of course pay petrol, bring sweets and be a great passenger!

I'm also a designer (not graphic.) I sometimes think about my design work when I run. How about an animation about a graphic design student trying to think of an animation whilst out on a run?

Sooo...Sunday nearly went to plan. Looking good for 3:33 until I hit the wall HARD at 20miles but managed to stagger in for a 6min PB at 3:41. Had full body rigor mortis yesterday but after a lovely 9hr sleep I'm feeling quite chipper.

Bought some shoes yesterday, entered the race today and hopefully by Saturday I'll be in the mood to hit the Peaks for a day of jog/ walk hill action.

Thank you everyone for egging me on! Can't wait to give this my all.

Thanks everyone. T-rex, Manchester will be my 4th marathon so not a veteran by any means but a little bit of experience. I hope to finish in 3:30-3:40ish.

May 3rd is VERY significant as it'll be my 30th birthday. I never celebrate as I find it a bit of a sad day but want to turn things round with an epic day out in Wales! All I want is to finish and if I'm not last then that'll be super fab. Given there were only 16 finishers in 2012, I could well be last!

I'll think about it very carefully and hopefully I'll know whether it's a goer by 12:40pm next Sunday.

Hi everyone, I'm a complete ultra newbie and want some advice whether it's possible to run my first ultra with only 4 weeks recovery/ prep?

I'll be running Manchester marathon on 6th April and I've got my eyes on a 34miler on the Pembrokeshire coast on 3rd May. I've not signed up yet and whether I go for it will depend on how good or rough I feel after Manchester.

Assuming I get through Manchester unscathed, what are the main things I need to do before Pembrokeshire? Rest, recover and keep mileage up?

Thank you one and all. As expected, the main message is to get a grip and learn some discipline!

Gymaddict, I'm eating a well balance diet of home cooked food, just too much of it! These 2kg have been hanging for dear life over the last 2 marathons but I've finally had enough and I'm on a mission to get rid.

Cougie, you are so right. I'm definitely in the habit of being a greedy bloater, always on the hunt for munchies.

From now on, I'm going to cut out the pre-run snacking, eat slightly smaller portions and not trof biscuits straight from the packet. 8 weeks and counting...

Can anyone offer a bit of advice on how to shift just a little bit of weight whilst marathon training. I'm keen to make sure I'm fuelled up before my runs and I'm always bloody starving afterwards. This is not helped by the fact I have a large appetite and a serious sweet tooth problem.

Yes, I fully understand the whole calories in/ calories out principle but just a few practical tips would be really great. I've got 8 weeks to shift about 2kg, shouldn't be difficult but I can't stop eating everything in sight!

It's got to be FOOD! At Market Drayton this year, finishers got a crate of 8(!!) Muller yoghurts, pork pie, sausage roll, and a beer voucher for a local pub. There was even more stuff that I can't remember but those were the highlights from an excellent cheap local race.
