Boston 2014

Posted: 02/03/2014 at 15:11

4th 20 miler done today.  23 hilly miles in 3:18 - feeling OK.   Managed a few MP runs over the last few weeks, including last Wednesday - 10 miles at 7.25 - could not have done 2 months ago.

Feeling confident that I can get close to my 3:20 target.  Will get a better idea of the Boston plan after Oakley 20 in 3 weeks

50 days to go today.   Flights & hotels all booked ...

Very pleased with progress but it gets tougher.  Longer for 20 miles thsi Sunday and lonegr MP run mid-week ... and still 100% on Jantastic!

Into week 3 now - so far so good but only still building up.  Folksworth 15 this weekend will be a good test

Flights not booked but booked hotel last May!   Using Marriott points to stay near Boston Common

3rd time in Boston for me.  I'm not sure how you get to the start from Newton but the buses from Boston start at Boston Common and there are big queues.  I guess the queues will be even bigger this year with the bigger field.

Hotels are not cheap over marathon weekend so having something in the bag is useful and if you can find something nearer the time then even better.

Last year, I went to Fenway Park to watch the baseball on the Saturday afternoon which was fun and cheap!   There is a place where the club allows ticket holders to sell on any spares at face value and I picked up a $20 ticket easily.  I guess it depends how well the team is playing as to how popular tickets are

I'm in!  Also paid for my son's entry as his birthday present - it will be his first.

5 weeks after Boston for me so should have recovered sufficiently

My 16 week training schedule starts on Monday.   Hotels have been booked for months using Marriott points but still have to sort out flights

I am not working in week one of the schedule so I should be able to complete the schedule and get off to a good start

Good luck everyone!

Come to Peterborough.  2 large laps & one small lap, all on tarmac paths.   Only the occasional flood and ice to worry about!

Does anyone have a spare entry for this event?

A late decision to attend a 1970s uni reunion means that I will be in Cardiff over the weekend and it would be great to take in this run as well

Unfortunately I am too late to enter but I am told by the organisers that I can transfer an existing entry

I entered in each of the last two years & from experience the tougher standards set in 2013 had a marked change.

I am V55 & for 2012 the BQ was 3.45 but you were also given another 60 second grace so effectively 3.46.  However there was a early entry period for those with times faster than the BQ.  I can't remember exactly but say more than 20 mins under the BQ were given a few days start then those 10 mins under another few days.  Effectively all these were guaranteed entry.   Finally all others with BQ were given a few days to enter.   During this period more entries were received than places and a cut-off established, which ended up being something like 3.44.30.   My time in Madrid was 3.45.40 so missed out on a place.   Entries were filled within the initial entry period

I ran Berlin last Sept on a date which was about 3 weeks after Boston 2013 entry opened.   MY BQ had been tightened to 3.40 without the 60 second extra.   I hoped to get a BQ and expected Boston 2013 to be full so was goin go use the time for Boston 2014 (Berlin 2012 was right at the begining of the qualifying period).   However when I got home I checked and discovered that 2013 was not full so entered for 2013.   I cannot be exact but I think it took more than 4 weeks for all places to be filled

Unfortunately I got injured in January but rather than let my place and travel plans go to waste I ended up walk / jogging in the 8 weeks up to the race and basically walked most of Boston.  I was on course for a 5:30 finish but obviously got stopped at 25.5 miles.

My Berlin time qualifies me for 2014 but like all others who could not complete 2013 will be given a guaranteed early entry slot.

Whilst undoubtedly Boston 2014 will be popular the BQs are quite tough so this limits the potential entry.   What might make soem difference in entry is the carry forward of the 2013 entries (about 5 - 6000 I think) but most of these will have BQs anyway.

In reply the 3 previous postings, my thoughts are:

any recognised marathon is OK for BQ as long as you can send a link to verify your time.

I suspect 3.06 for 3.10 will probably be OK

I would be very surprised if a time 15 minutes under the BQ is not good enough.  Book your hotel now!

I will be back in 2014 for my third attempt at Boston.   Regardless of this years events I think it is my favourite marathon.   The whole event is very special

Hope this helps - see you next April!!

Good Friday!  21 miles on a treadmill in 4:45.  16 miles walking & 5 jogging.

Will see how my hamstring is over the weekend before making a final decison to buy a plane ticket or not!
