How to decide race pace to aim for?

Why not just run 10k in training and see what you can do?

I always just look to beat my personal best, whether it be by a few seconds....

Low carb diet doesnt equal weight loss. Equally, neither does low fat or sugsr, contrary to the beliefs of many. Calorie deficit = weight loss.

Starchy carbs are the best thing for running. If you are doing plenty of running you have a good chance of running at a calorie deficit anyway. It is typical to lose around 110 - 130 calories per mile ran. If you ran 5 miles, you can stock up on enough carbs for less than 600 calories on top of what you would eat normally...

Brighton Marathon 2015

Was interested in doing this race about 2 weeks ago until the price got ramped up another £10 to £62.50, plus the 'insignificant' booking fee charge of £3.50-4 (I know they arent the only ones who do this, but it is a con).

So the price is £66, not £62.50.

This is a bit of a rip-off if you ask me. Saying that, I am sure they will sell out, but bumping up the price like this is just not on for me.

Am considering doing the Brighton Marathon 2015. Could anybody please advise when the places run out, on average. I understand it is fairly early....

Paracetamol before marathon

Am running a marathon this Sunday. I have been experiencing a bit of toothache recently and so was planning to take 1g of paracetamol before the big race as a precaution to any annoyances during the race.

Along with this, I am planning to have what some might say a 'standard' breakfast in preparation although this will involve an energy drink of some sort and some kind of carb/protein bar, although no out of this world stimulants

Just checking that taking paracetamol close to a big race with other energy products will not have any adverse effects. I am aware of the guy who tragically lost his life at the Brighton Marathon, where it was found he had a 'cocktail' of stimulants and painkillers such as Ibuprofen.

If anyone could advise, would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Half marathon to full marathon

I am doing my first marathon too in 10 days time after a year or so of 10ks, 10-milers and half-marathons.

I have done almost nothing differently to be honest. I have considered the half-marathon and 10-mile race that I did last month be pretty fair training on top of the normal training runs I would do - a speed training run, something like a 10k and I also play football with some friends.

The only thing I added was one longer run last weekend, to see where I was at in terms of pace, and to give my legs preparation. I aimed to go anything from 17 miles and up and did 21.

Next Sunday I will make sure that I have more water, more fuel mid-race (probably jelly babies) and then have a recovery milkshake afterwards; and I now have a better idea of the pace I can achieve.

How about taking a day off from exercise altogether?

I know not all days you are doing intensive exercise, but how, for example, will your legs seize up if you dont do exercise on Fridays? Without trying to sound too abrupt, this sounds slightly obsessive. The body needs time to recover and you may feel better for it.

I am around the 19-20 min mark for a flat Parkrun. Doing it every week I didnt manage to beat my PB, then I did some other distance races mixed with some days off, storing up carbs, relaxing. etc. and it works.
