That is like saying that the majority of people would stop smoking if they stuck to it.
ALL people who stuck to a low calorie diet would naturally lose weight... but people dont.
Diets are cr@p. They are for people who are in denial who are under the impression that they are a special case while needing to go on a special low food binge in order to lose weight (and then are not programmed to eat normally when they come off).
They are designed by the conartists who want to make money out of this myth. That is why you have never heard of the 'Slightly lower portions' diet, because that doesnt sound revolutionary enough, even though that is all what is required for most people to lose weight.
