Greater Manchester Marathon - UK's Flattest Marathon 2014

Posted: 26/03/2014 at 10:03

I've used pace wristbands and found them really helpful. Whenever I've attempted to follow a pacer I've found it very congested with other runners doing the same thing and I never found the pace quite suited me.It seemed that I was constantly adjusting my pace. But clearly many people like running with a pacer. If it were me in your position I would go for your sub 4 and hang on as long as you can. Be positive and believe in yourself.

14 day forecast (if you can believe it) is a high of 11c and cloudy. I'll settle for that.

I always find the taper in the last few weeks before a marathon a bit of a dilemma. Either I think I've tapered too much or too little. With less than 2 weeks now to race day what is the longest run people did as their longest run last week and what will your longest run be with one week to go? I did 14 on Sunday just gone but not sure what to do as my long run this coming Sunday, one week before the marathon. I'm always very wary of doing anything more than 8.

10k race before marathon

I'm due to run the Manchester Marathon. I am doing a 10k race two weeks before the marathon. I am an experienced runner and have done about twenty marathons but I've never done a race so close to a marathon before. I'd be interested to hear any views on this.Is it too close to be beneficial? Will it help me run faster in the marathon? Any experiences of running a short race close to running a marathon I'd be interested to hear about.

Can anyone who knows the marathon route well, tell me if there are any hills? I know it is claimed to be the flattest marathon in the UK but there is an elevation of 54m. Is this very gradual throughout the route?

Hampton Court Half 2014

I completed this run yesterday. There has been a lot of criticism of this race elsewhere in this forum. The busy road you mention along with narrow pavements presented a lot of problems. Too many runners in confined sections. Also race route was short by .4 of mile, so it was not a half marathon as advertised. The organisers admitted to the error. There were a lot of unhappy runners, disappointed that there times would not count as a half marathon time.

Hampton Court not quite a half marathon 2014

Disappointed in organisation. The start lacked atmosphere. There was no decent PA system and no music or count down to fire you up. Although the route followed the Thames, in many points, the race followed narrow pavements and runners were forced onto busy roads in order to overtake other runners. There were over 2000 runners. This was too many.  The fact that this half marathon was short by .4 ml made the race a disaster for anyone aiming for a PB. Organisers have admitted the error but as yet have shown no intention to refund runners entry fees. Yet they did not provide what they advertised.  It will be interesting to see how they respond. Good points- nice medal and goody bag. Potential to be a fast race but route needs rethinking and marshals need to be briefed well.

Berlin Marathon 2013

I am thinking of doing a half marathon (Bristol) two weeks before Berlin. I intend running at my marathon pace and using it as a training run. I'd be interested to hear from anybody that has done this. Did it help or hinder your marathon? My longest training run at present is 20 miles.

Thanks for that advice. I'll try that.

Can anybody tell me if an energy drink is provided during the race and if so what it is and can you buy it in this country?
