Apologies - was intended as a 'big plug' just a little mention as I hope to be of help to Preston area runners.

Pop in for a brew when you are in town - great cakes too from the shop next door.

Salomon Rivington Trail Half-Marathon

Hello everyone,

only just spotted this thread about the event tomorrow, but here is some ( hopefully useful ) info to some of the questions.

Public transport - buses number 125 and 126 run from Bolton ( to Preston and vica versa ) and pass the end of road to the school and start. During school times these buses actually go right past the school, but on Saturdays i think the nearest stop is near the 'CROWN' pub, its only about half a mile from the school and very easy to find. Buses are approx every 10 mins.

Train, nearest station is Bolton Middlebrook ( next to Reebok Stadium ) this is about 3 miles from the school, but not on a bus route, you would have to walk ( or jog ) to Chorley New Road ( 1 mile ) and pick up the bus, the bus stops close to the 'Beehive' pub. Then its straight down the road for 2 miles on the bus to the CROWN ( see above ).
There is also a station at Adlington, similar distance from the school, but it would be a bit trickier to get a bus from there.

Bolton to Middlebrook on train, only 5 minutes.

The route, i have ran around several parts of the route during the last few days, with the heavy rain in Bolton right now, there will be several muddy patches an a few very wet areas. One stretch will be very wet, at least ankle height. Don't think road shoes will be adequate to be honest, something a little more solid with a little more grip. The Salomon SPEEDCROSS would be preferable to the WINGS, but it might be a little late in the day for shoe changes!

I'll be wearing my lovely near Goretex Speedcross, although I think I will still get me feet wet in the 'deep' section!

Local weather for race day is forecast to be around 11degrees at the start, sun with a wind at your back to start, so just about perfect, course is quite sheltered for the most part.

I'll be there with a small selection of kit from the shop in Bolton, its only 6 miles from the school, but will have the Salomon shoes available and discounted along with a few other bits and pieces, also discount at the shop all day for runners from the event if you want to pop over later for gait analysis etc.

Hope this all helps.

I'll keep an eye on hear today if you have more questions.

Cheers

Paul

Heaton Parkrun with a Garmin

Posted: 26/05/2010 at 12:23
Hi Paul

I have a Garmin ( 405 ) and have ran Heaton Park Run several times, all with the Garmin and its always pretty much spot on, 3.1 to 3.11

The leafcover really doesn't seem to affect it and I think it can handle 'this amount of trees' no problem, think it has to be very dense to loose the signal, I've had no problems that I'd notice anywhere around the Bolton / Rivington area and run thru parkland and forrests regularly.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the gps on the iphone uses phone masts to triangulate its position when it can't get gps and hence 'cuts corners' or draws a line between where it knows for sure it lost the signal and where it found it again - hope that makes sense.

Another helpful hint - if you are interested in a particular route/course try

http://connect.garmin.com/

then click the explore button.

If you then type 'Heaton' and 'Manchester' in the 2 fields it will show you loops around Heaton Park in Manchester where people have used a garmin and uploaded it to the garmin website. Really useful.
If the uses have entered a relevant title you should be able to find various races/routes etc no problem. I have a few Parkruns on there for sure.

Cheers

Paul
