First marathon

Posted: 12/05/2013 at 02:27

I have just done my 1st marathon in Milton Keynes. I had a fantastic day, the support was great, course mildy undulating & scenery on the whole good. We finished in the mk dons stadium which was a nice touch!

Didn't get a great time (wheels fell off early due to heat) However the potential is there for a marathon beginner (like me) to get a very respectable time!

FIRST MARATHON 3 WEEKS, HELP!

Thanks for that also!

I wont be running in a ted costume, I would be a rather tall bear at 6 ft 4 " !

Think I will keep it as minimilist as the weather allows on the day. The marathon is daunting enough without lugging a bear around!!  Thas not to say its an achievment running in a costume (we have a tough off road local new yrs race here -  the Huncote Hash with a regular gorilla running every year!)

Camelbak arrived today, I'm very impressed. Just need to fill her up & do some gentle taper runs to get used to. Think key to it is liberal barrier cream on anywhere the rucksack contacts the skin!

Ta all for advice!

Sore nips no problem for me since I discovered zinc oxide tape!  In terms of all other potential chafing areas I find liberal application of vasaline the answer.

No time to arrange any chiropractor/sports massage but I'm following a gentle stretch program for lower back pain (glutes/hamstrings/pelvis etc)

Will be running whatever as I am sponsered. As I've said to sponsers I will crawl round if I have to!!!

FIRST MARATHON 3 WEEKS, HELP!

Many thanks Also ran.

I've ordered the camelbak rucksack. I will trial although I am tapering as its 2 weeks till race day. Nothing to stop me doing a 3 or 4 mile gentle jog to see how it feels. Cant be any worse than the lead weight feeling I was getting in the lower back using the waist hydration pack.

MK offers plenty of water stations but I like to have a small sip of water every mile, just something to look forward to I guess in the latter part of the marathon!

Also issues with waist camelbak (weight around small of back) Decided to try the backpack sort for my marathon in 2 weeks.

Has anyones run flm wearing a rucksack style hydration pack (camelbak classic)?

Cheers,

Pete.

FIRST MARATHON 3 WEEKS, HELP!

I am running the milton keynes mara in 3 weeks. Ive just done my last long training run (18 miles) and now plan to taper.

Yesterdays run went ok but my main problem was lower back pain which forced me to walk for a bit at 16 miles then run the last 2 all be it slow!  I suspect its weak core muscles causing this.

Ive been doing planks, sit up & press ups for the last month as I have experienced this training for 1/2 mara's in the past. Can anyone offer me any advice given ive only got 3 weeks left!

Only if you're a very close relation.  Must try harder!

Phil you echo what my work mates say. Think my fondness of Ms Goose a bit strange as well!!!
