Rodent - this year was my first Comrades. My mara Pb was 3.51 pre Comrades and at the end of 2012 before the training kicked in I had done 40 marathons and a smattering of ultras, since 2008.
I stuck to the plan with a few exceptions and I did do one weekend of back to back marathons - Bewl Water then 3 Forts - as was told that running on very tired legs was a good thing to do....slowly mind, so as not to get injured..
One of my 'training' runs was Crawly track - 6 hours worth of flat, oh so flat running - and clocked 35 miles. I did that purely as a mind game as F2D is quite right, it is a massive mind game.
I was after a sub 11 - bronze medal - but alas missed it by 12 mins but was very pleased due to conditions. I did have a story to tell, I was lucid, I was emotional and I was full of beans and very happy with life....NOT taken out on a stretcher. I ran / walked from the beginning.
I have my flights booked and paid for and hotel all sorted so I plan on doing pretty much the same for 2014. Am nursing a few niggles and am not doing anything crazy as I know that what I did this year saw me through in one of the toughest conditionwise to date.
