Comrades 2014

Posted: 06/06/2014 at 13:58

Hi everyone - at last....managed to get on here and that's only because it is my first day back at work....HA!

WHAT an amazing Comrades that was !!!  So blooming GREAT to meet so many of you !!  Huge well dones to you all.

I managed to get in at 10.42 and got my bronze and B2B. Vic Clapham last year at my first so I brought it along with me and it is very happy with it's two new buddies. It felt great to walk around Joe Coors with all my bling a-chinking.

What a team we were / are !!

My 4 wee stops did make some of you laugh and yes, as Slotwin says....maybe I should change my name to 4W !!  Well, it's harder for us 'ladies' to have those wee breaks so one had to pick and chose and go when the opportunity arose.

I also thought the Down was harder than the Up........it is compensated by the lovely finish and the last 2K build up.

I don't really have any gripes - my Achilles - which have been niggling since last year - did me proud. Hurting from the start but able to keep under control.

Got a lovely blister on the side of my heel and felt it brewing along the way - with about 1.5K to go it burst like a good 'un. Felt the skin tear and everything....I could not actually walk on it so had to keep going with a tippy-toe stylie......whilst it hurt I was able to rejoice in the fact that it happended when it did.

Well done to you all.......I do have to say in particular to Jackie - truly awesome - and Douglas for getting his Green Number AND running with his sister on her first Comrades. True Comrade spirit.

I am done now with Comrades - got what I wanted - but will follow you all if you go back. I too am hoping to get to Two Oceans, hopefully in 2016.

I don''t feel too sad about not going back to Comrades as I know I will see so many of you out and about on the marathon circuit. It has been a pleasure to meet ALL of you and long may it continue. Thanks for making my second and last Comrades just awesome.

Oh and looking at the predicted times I am the slowest to date so, look out for me you speedy guys and hope I don't catch up with you....

Thanks Slotwin......he is super speedy so would not have run with me, but just good to have his company and yes, gutted for him. Luckily the Comrades family is a very friendly one and I know a few bods now. Am also with you on the mix of calm, relief and fear.My sports therapist told me yesterday that I was very chilled and calm....more so than last year. I think really it's because I am almost lost for words at the enormity of what is about to happen for the second time. Blissfully ignorant last year. Still, VERY excited though.

Everyone starting to head off now so SAFE JOURNEYS everyone........

Be safe and see you there.

Sad news from my end - my running club pal who was coming with me to do our B2B together has sadly had to pull out. He has a nasty ear infection and cannot fly. So gutted for him as it is because of him I got to do Comrades last year. Big old shocker that was yesterday. I will just HAVE to run my socks off now for me, him and the club.

Thanks for the clothing update - I will dig out some space blankets and some old trakkie bottoms.

I am a lone female travelling alone - not massively concerned but just want to make sure that the mini bus - taxi thing is always at the airport for transfers to hotels. Fido said about it last year and I strode confidently out and there it was......easy to be confident then as I had 3 running pals with me.

Had my last massage and ultrasound this morning - have very tight hamstring as being a daft cow, I took part in an inaugural parkrun in local town on Saturday and ran probably a wee bit too hard. Hoping good old massage and rest now will do the trick.

Will go out for a gentle 4 miler tomoz and then a few more on Thursday morning before my drive to Heathrow.

Popping vitamins / Berocca like a good 'un....avoiding anyone who looks ill, sniffing and sneezing.

Am very excited but also nervous but I guess it would be wrong to be anything other.

Possum - I also arrive on the Friday at 11.25am on SAA (leave LHR at 19:00)

My parents still live in Durban and will meet me at arrivals however I've hired a car as well so if you need a lift to Durban or to the Expo site then let me know and I'll message you my details.

Hi there - that is really kind of you and many thanks for the offer. I will say a no at this stage - only because my running club pal who arrives on Thursday - will be waiting for me to get to hotel so we can go hit the expo......I plan to arrive, grab my bags and hoof it out to the mini bus taxi to TRY to get into Durbs ASAP. Best laid plans and all that as it could go boobies up.  Thanks again and will catch up over the weekend am sure.

Morning All,

Sorry I could not make it to the start this year.  Periostitis (that I got at Comrades 2013) re-occurred and I'm in a protracted rest at the moment.  Which coincides with unemployment as I lost my job in March and its a bit difficult to justify spending so much to go to SA even if I could run.

I'll try and follow on-line and by the streaming broadcast on the day.  I sure there will be tears as you sing Shozoloza and that cannon fires.

Happy running all

Sorry to hear that but just want to say again, many thanks for your write up re the Down Run. I saved it when you posted it and I keep reading it in the hope it helps me on the day. Hope you get back to running soon.

I'm staying at the Hilton (see list above).

I may also be up for breakfast at the Mugg & Bean, as I'm sure I'm going to have a massive hunger on the Monday morning!

Ooops - sorry - missed that. Am a crap speed reader.
