Hi Ruth,

Could i please ask another question.

Never before have i taken immodium. But having had troubles on a couple of runs in the past i thinking it might be wise.

Are there any pitfalls with this, is it safe and if so at what time should i take this, remembering i am expecting to be on the course for just short of 5 hours.

Thanks.

Hi John,

it is not a first option really only should be used when other attemps have failed. As long as you don't use it regularly (for example for the 2 marathons you run a year then it won't be a health problem in long term but your bowels will may not right for a couple of days after.). As first line advice not for regular runs but  for key races you could reduce fibre in diet for 2-3 days - reducing fruit & veg, whole grain products etc . The reason I did not advise this above in answer to another post as this is not a daily solution. Perhaps practice a carb load with low fibre foods as reduce fibre 1-2 days before and see if this helps before a long run?

Gareth,

I think you are being way too hard on yourself. You did not have the best prep but you did it. I think the last 10km will nearly always be hard especially when you where unable to do the longest runs so exhaustion was likely a big part of the slow down as you simply did not have the miles in the legs and when this tired the digestion of anything is slowed. I think you need to think of all the positives  and focus on these and you should will be pleased.
