I would say that it worked very well for me and I finally shifted some weight last year that it had seemed I would never lose.
Even after running for quite a few years and increasing mileage year on year I never lost anything but 6 months on the 5:2 and I had shifted a lot of the excess (3st) and haven't looked back.
Running has improved dramatically as a result.
I am back on it at the moment till I lose some excess as I also let myself go a little over xmas.
