Shades Marathon Training

Well after Belin being my first DNS, I have just had a bit of good news.

I emailed them last week saying that I was withdrawing due to injury but at the same time knowing it was probably my last chance as from next year it's a ballot and I have never got a place through any ballot. Anyway, they replied this morning and if I fill in a form, I get guaranteed entry into next years 

So I should have plenty of time to get my ITB back in shape without rushing before I get back in training around May next year.

I haven't been here for a few months so thought I would give an update.

After about three runs (10k was the longest) after the Brighton Marathon I started to get a pain in the outside of my left knee. The first run that I noticed it, I had to stop at 6k because I started to feel sick and then when I tried to start again, the pain was so bad I had to walk the last 4k in the rain to get home.

I rested it for 2 weeks and tried again but the pain was still there. Another 3 weeks rest and I just about managed 5k. Then I thought "Sod it, I'm getting a bike".

I went to see a Physio in June and she said I had ITBS, to rest for another 2 weeks and then do some exercises.

When I did start running again it was 1min walk followed by 1 min run for 2k. The distance built up and then I moved to 30s walk followed by 1 min walk. The first time I did that (late July, early August), I started to go again almost straight away but I walked a bit more before running and that seemed to help. A couple of weeks ago I got up to 6k but have since been busy and I've had a cold for the last week.

To top it off, I have that place in the Berlin Marathon.

I thought I had resigned myself that I wouldn't be doing it but then I got the registration email. Now 99% of me says I shouldn't do it but there's that 1% that wants to.

I've been cycling so haven't lost all my fitness but it's not the same. My goal was one marathon and Berlin was because I didn't get into London and to try and go from walk/running 6k to 42.2k after having a cold, I know will just be stupid. I've done what I set out to do and risking my leg just isn't worth it.

It was also going to be a sightseeing trip as well so I may go in May next year and slowley build the leg up to where I was before.

Would it be worth seeing a physio and does anyone have any links for good sites showing exercises/massages?

During the tail end of a 10k run on Sunday I started to get a pain on the outside of my left knee but as it was near the end, I carried on. It got better during the week and so I went out again last night. After a while I was getting a dull ache but then around 6k I had to walk. About 500 meters later I managed to run for about 5 meters, walked again for about 10, run for about 50 meters and then just gave up. I was 3k from home so just stopped my watch and walked home in the rain .

I can also feel it when straighting my leg and also when going up stairs. I did put a frozen packet of chips (all I had) on it last night.

I've been Googling it, but could probably self diagnose myself with several different things. Therefore are there any suggestions here? Would it be worth going to see a physio?

Also, I am going to make sure I rest it because I have a place in Berlin and I would much rather rest it now, than rsik it.

Jase-Runner - If it was someone else that had the injury and was thinking of running, what advise would you give them?

Hmm, I'm thinking if I should stay for an extra day now (Thursday - Wednesday) to fit all this in and have a bit of time to just explore. What are peoples thoughts?

Althought it may seem like it, I haven't forgotton the actual marathon  Did I read someone saying that it's good to watch the roller blading marathon as well?

Hi All

I can't remember if I've posted in here before, so Hi.

I entered last year not having run a marathon before and while having lunch after the Brighton Marathon I can remember saying something along the lines of "Never again". However come the Monday, my views had changed  Now, as long as I can sort my little niggles out, I'll be in Berlin. Just got to get over the mental hurdle of booking flights!

Marathon aside, I've never been to Berlin before, so after what I've been through in the past 2 years, I thought I would extend it and make a short break out of it as well. Currently I'm thinking of getting the first flight on the Thursday and coming back on the last flight on Tuesday. So I'm thinking that taking travel, the expo, breakfast run and the marathon into account, that will leave me 2 1/2 - 3 days for sight seeing. For those that have been and done it all before, does that sound about right and if so will that be enough time to see the sights or will I have a very packed trip?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it although I'm slightly nervous as it will be the first time abroad alone for me and so I'm worried about eating before hand.

When I registered I hadn't run a marathon and so didn't put a time down however I have since run the Brighton marathon. I emailed the organisers the otherday with a screen shot of my results and a certificate (free one from Marathon-Photos) and got a reply back saying they have updated my time.

Based on the pens from last year, it should move me forward one however I won't know if it has until I get my number. Plus if they keep the pens the same.

Right, I'm back. After only running once in April, Brighton Marathon, due to resting my foot, coming down with a cold post marathon, revising for OU exams and the working 16 hour days (even at weekends), I started running again last week. Only a 5k and a 10k at an easy pace but I really did feel the 10k.

I've decided that I'm probably going to see a podiatrist as my foot still isn't 100%. Maybe a long shot, but can anyone recommend one in the Gatwick/Horley/Redhill/Regiate area?

So, as I've decided I want to do Berlin, just got the mental hurdle of booking the flights, what do I need to do training wise? Do I need to start from the beginning of the plan or will some of the previous training still be there. My only concern is the fitness lost during April. If it's a case of starting at week one, should I just take it easy for the rest of this month?

After I had ran Brighton I can remember saying something along the lines of "Berlin, no way" as Brighton was my first marathon. Come Monday I was considering it and now I'm at the point where I'm 99% sure I'm going to run it .

I saw the highlights as well. There was a bit near the end where they were showing people who were struggling and then out of the blue I appeared behind one of them. I kind of felt bad because I can't remember seeing them struggling but by the time I was on Maderia Drive, there was only one thing I was looking at and that was the word "Finish".
