I ran for 20 years then gave up due to time constraints as in work, caring for elderly parents and grandchildren. 2 years ago I was diagnosed with severe arthritis in one knee and mild in another. One doctor blamed it on my weight and 20 years of running. Another said it would have happened anyway. With her blessing she encouraged me to get out walking. I now walk anything from 3 miles to last weeks 18 miles. The doctor knows I do high mileage.
I asked about starting to run again and she told me to go ahead. If I am not in pain and can cope ok she sees no reason not to as arthritis is degenerative and will get worse ni matter what I do but any exercise will keep it at bay longer than sitting doing nothing.
I am now incorporating small jogs into my walks with the aim to do more jogging after a 25 mile walking event I am doing in 2 weeks.
Oh and I was told to lose weight as very overweight now. So 2st 5lbs lighter my aim is to be running 10ks next year at the ripe old age of 61.
Hope you manage to run again sofa athlete. We can do this.
