Hi Folks. For those of us that dream of breaking the 4 hr barrier, it may be more straightforward than we think. My last 22 marathons were between 4:11 and 4:35 (average was around 4:25). This was due to trying to keep up an average 10 mins per mile pace and the experience of struggling in second half of the New York Marathon after going for it in the first half....a few years ago. A few weeks ago, I decided to run at 1/2 marathon pace (7 miles per hour as long as possible) and you know what....managed to keep going to do 3:58:13 at the Crewe track marathon. Okay...that was simple....105.5 laps and only 40 people on the circuit. Then last weekend it was the Valencia Marathon.....same tactics.....and guess what 3:57:06. So...what have I learnt...if you have built up some stamina, try running at the pace you would normally for which is half the distance of the race you are running (e.g. a 1/2 marathon pace in a marathon, a 10K pace for a half, 5k pace for a 10K)...you may be surprised that it is only your mind that is holding you back :0) Happy running

Michael....thought it would be a tall order to follow-up on last years wowsy event but....you guys have done it. From watching a new world record on the track before we went, to a cup of coffee at the end & the most fantastic goody bag...it was Brillinat. A special mention to the MC who kept us all going. As for me....I blitzed my usual 4:20 something times with a 3:58:40 and qualification as a C seed for the Comrades Ultra in South Africa. Thank you for taking the bet in the pub 2 years ago. Hope you can do Deja Vu 3. I intend to be first n your runners list :0) A massive thank you to you and your fellow organisers

Hi Folks. The latest from Comrades House on the 2013 entries:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA RELEASE: 2013 Comrades Marathon Early Bird Entries Closed

The second month of the 2013 Comrades Marathon entry process is underway, with entries currently standing at 8515. The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced that the September offering of the ‘early bird’ entry fee of R300 which was implemented for South African runners only, will no longer be valid as the new 2013 fee of R320 kicks in until entries officially close.

Runners from the Rest of Africa will be charged an entry fee of R500 and the cost to International athletes is $US180.

Runners who have not entered the iconic race as yet, have until 30 November 2012 or before the cap of 18000 entries has been reached. No further entries will be accepted after this.

The entry requirements, which are clearly indicated on the entry form, must be adhered to at all times or runners could lose their place at the Start.

Runners may enter:

  • online via the Comrades Marathon      website: www.comrades.com;
  • at Mr Price Sport, Home and      Clothing stores countrywide;
  • through the post by posting the      completed entry form with proof of payment to the CMA Office in      Pietermaritzburg: P.O. Box 100621, Scottsville, 3209;
  • Comrades Marathon House: by      handing in the completed entry form together with payment at the CMA      office in Pietermaritzburg.

With planning for next year’s race already in full swing, the CMA is all set for a Comrades showdown, come Sunday, 2 June 2013. In keeping with tradition, the race will be an ‘up-run’ next year, starting at the Durban City Hall at 05h30 and finishing at The Cricket Oval in Pietermaritzburg 12 hours later.

CMA Race Director, Johan Van Staden says, ‘With just about half of the total number of entries already received within the first month of the entry process, we are confident that the 2013 Comrades Marathon will once again be oversubscribed.’

Van Staden adds, ‘With this in mind, we urge all runners wishing to be a part of the 2013 Comrades Marathon be proactive and secure their place at the Start.’

The CMA has reminded all runners that they may enter the 2013 race prior to running a qualifier (minimum qualifying distance of 42.2km). Qualifying details must be submitted to the CMA by 6 May 2013. For more details, please visit: www.comrades.com

HI Folks A message from Comrades HQ. PLease pass it on and encourgage runners to entrer early

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA RELEASE: 2013 Comrades Marathon Entries Going Fast

Barely three weeks into the entry process of the 2013 ‘Ultimate Human Race’, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced that well over a third of the entry tally has been filled, with entries now standing at 6419.

Aspiring runners need to enter by 30 November 2012 or before the cap of 18000 entries has been reached. No further entries will be accepted after this, so runners are urged to enter now or risk losing out.

It is worth a reminder to Comrades runners that the annual road-running challenge has been oversubscribed for the past three years, meaning that late entrants will be left disappointed as they will not be allowed to participate in South Africa’s most famous road-running challenge.

The good news is that South African runners can enjoy a discounted entry fee of R300 until 30 September 2012, thanks to the CMA catering exclusively for its local enthusiasts. The new increased entry fee of R320 will kick in on 1 October 2012 until the entry process is closed.

Runners from the Rest of Africa will be charged an entry fee of R500 and the cost to International athletes is $US180.

The entry requirements, which are clearly indicated on the entry form, must be adhered to at all times or runners could lose their place at the Start.

Runners may enter:

  • online via the Comrades      Marathon website: www.comrades.com;
  • at Mr Price Sport, Home and      Clothing stores countrywide;
  • through the post by posting the      completed entry form with proof of payment to the CMA Office in      Pietermaritzburg: P.O. Box 100621, Scottsville, 3209;
  • Comrades Marathon House: by      handing in the completed entry form together with payment at the CMA      office in Pietermaritzburg.

With runners the world over still singing the success of the 2012 event, the CMA is all set for a Comrades showdown, come Sunday, 2 June 2013. In keeping with tradition, the race will be an ‘up-run’ next year, starting at the Durban City Hall at 05h30 and finishing at The Cricket Oval in Pietermaritzburg 12 hours later.

CMA Race Director, Johan Van Staden says, ‘With the large number of entries already received within the first three weeks of the entry process, we are confident that the 2013 Comrades Marathon will once again be oversubscribed.’

Van Staden adds, ‘With this in mind, we urge our local runners to enter during the month of September and benefit from our ‘early bird’ entry fee of R300. We further ask that all runners wishing to be a part of the 2013 Comrades Marathon be proactive and secure their place at the Start.’

The CMA has reminded all runners that they may enter the 2013 race prior to running a qualifier (minimum qualifying distance of 42.2km). Qualifying details must be submitted to the CMA by 6 May 2013. For more details, please visit: www.comrades.com

Salted oranges were one of the spectator giveaways. That first time you have the salted orange...expecting a straight orange ...is an interesting experience :0)
