The All New 2015 Pirate Mentoring Thread

Posted: 13/03/2015 at 17:10

After a terrible year last year things are going well this year and completed my first half marathon a few weeks ago (very slowly but at the slow pace I was going could easily have done another five or six miles).

I am doing Bala Middle Distance in June (only 12 weeks to go) and will be doing part of the Long Course Weekend in July (definitely bike but also tempted by swim) and then very tempted by Ocean Lava Middle Distance in Fishguard in August. After all of this I will be ready to sign up for Ironman Wales 2016 when the places go on sale in September.

i am following Fink half ironman plan and all going well at the moment.

I live in South West Wales so most of my training is hilly but that can only be a good thing?

I like heart rate training and very motivated by the numbers and seeing the numbers improve so ideally would suit a mentor who can not only shout at me and encourage but also can suggest improvements from looking at my data. (ANS I would fully expect the question "are you really that slow?"

Anyone fancy a challenge to help me get to Ironman Wales 2016?

Ocean Lava Wales 70.3

I am very tempted by this as it is local to me and certainly a fantastic place to cycle. Anyone got plans of doing a recce of the bike course and would like some company give me a shout.

Thanks for the confirmation that its a good race but so far not many others racing it ?

Dave - if you already owe the wife you might as well race and just increase the debt?

Anyone else signed up for Bala Middle Distance in June ?

What could be better than a nice day out on a Sunday in Wales in the Summer ?

Any advice from people who are taking part or have done so in the past ?

Heart Rate Training

Gideon Levy - many thanks for your response. Will work with the 187 for now and test again in a few weeks.

Is is this something that needs to be monitored and changes as fitness improves ?

Heart Rate Training

Posted: 15/02/2015 at 09:56

Sorry to hijack this thread but just a question about max heart rate. Based on 220 minus age it would calculate it to 176 (yes I know I am old) but based on max heart rate over 5k hard (ish) run it would be 187. (Two 5k runs and same result).

is the 187 a sign that I am very unfit and over exerting or should be the figure used to calculate heart rate zones ? i struggle to stay in zone 2 based on 220 minus age and using 187 would give a little more scope but I am worried that using the wrong figure would mean I am training in zone 3. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Time for a new bike

Thanks for your but one of the problems with my existing bike is that it's too small. Has Toby extra long seat post to get the saddle high enough and the handlebars are still too low.
Going to head to all the local bike shops today in the hope I have a few more choices but one the problems of living in West Wales is that I don't feel I have the best shops about - I should really travel further but then if there is a problem I have to travel again so I would prefer to buy local if I can

I was just hoping some others had similar problems and could advise me from experience.

Time for a new bike

Finally I am buying a new bike but as it is under the cycle to work scheme I am limited to £1000. This already limits my options but at 6 foot 4 I am struggling to find frames in my size to actually sit on them To try them for size and in fact have only found one locally that seems to fit and I was able to try. It was a 2015 Giant Defy 1.

My question is does anyone know of alternatives for £1000 or under where they make a frame for someone tall with long legs ?

although I am sure a bike fit would be very useful if my only option is the Giant then it might be throwing away money that could be used for something else?

Thanks in advance for any help / advice.

Ironman Wales 2014 - is it possible ?

Is 16 months enough time to train from relatively unfit to Ironman?
