I went for simple and run SPDs on all bikes. I then have a comfy pair of MTB shoes and very stiff sole MTB shoes for the road bikes / racing.
This allows me to run in my shoes in transition without worrying about falling over or ruining the cleats.
However, I'm sure I'm losing out on something by not using proper road pedals / cleats, just not sure what.
I'd say it's going to be almost unmeasurable any loss of watts from having an uber stiff sole.
And you probably gain that if theres a long transition ?
A lot depends on how easy it is to put on the shoes and fasten them I guess ?
When I changed from a cheap pair of decathlon shoes to Mavic with carbon sole, the difference in power throughput was amazing
