Pain down there

Posted: 18/03/2014 at 22:56

I was occasionally getting pain in that region a couple of years ago. Went to the doctor, didn't establish the cause but did at least rule out anything serious.

I eventually worked out that it was a combination of wearing a belt and the seating position in my car putting pressure on the area just above my genitals. I (mostly) stopped wearing a belt and haven't had any problems since.

The sleeper train for Lodon to Scotland

Posted: 13/03/2014 at 21:58

I did London to Leuchars on the sleeper a couple of weeks ago, in a reclining seat. Found it comfortable, but only got about 4 or 5 hours sleep. Every time the train stopped I woke up, and it stopped a lot.

You might do better in a cabin, but if they end up splitting the train in half at 2 in the morning I doubt you'll sleep through it.

Oh, and if you're driving to Euston:

1) leave plenty of time, I nearly missed the train

2) book the car park in advance, it's a lot cheaper

What's on your race bucket list?

Current goal is 100 parkruns. Should get there sometime next year.

I don't do marathons, not sure if there are many (any?) iconic races at shorter distances.

Things you should have known at that start

Things I didn't know about at the start:

  • parkrun
  • running clubs usually have members with a wide range of abilities
  • shorter events can be more enjoyable than long events
  • Bodyglide

marathon fuel weight and time

4:50 for 26.2 miles is 11 minute miles. So you appear to be doing your long runs at race pace.

Slow down by a couple of minutes per mile, it's meant to be a long slow run.

Looks promising. Seems pretty similar to the spreadsheet I'm currently using.

Would be nice if you could enter which shoes you ran in and have it track how many miles you've run in each pair. Also if you could export your data (e.g. to .csv or xml), although cutting and pasting sort of works.

One more thing. How come the January Challenge started on the 2nd? I'm sure I wasn't the only one out running on New Year's Day.

What has changed?

Currently, if you transfer numbers the worst that can happen is that the person running with someone else's number gets disqualified. The new rule allows for some sort of disciplinary action against both people.

I'd assume they can only discipline you if you're a member of UKA. Can't see what they can do to you if you're not.

Antibacterial Soap

Posted: 22/12/2013 at 15:31

The linked story seems to be concerned with a particular ingredient - triclosan. My understanding is that there's no evidence that it's better than regular soap, and (fairly weak) evidence that it could be harmful. I think that particular ingredient should be restricted to over the counter and prescription products until there's more evidence on it's safety and effectiveness.

I wouldn't support a more general ban on antibacterial soaps. I've been using anti-bacterial soap (Wright's Coal Tar* Soap) for a couple of weeks as I've had folliculitis. I don't think I should need a prescription to get anti-bacterial soap, my GP probably has better things to do with his time.

* now contains tea-tree oil instead of Coal Tar, 'cos Coal Tar is carcinogenic.

List of Xmas and New Year parkruns - http://www.parkrun.org.uk/christmas-compendium/

My brother is getting married on the 24th, so I can't see me doing one on Xmas day this year. I'll probably run 2 on New Year's Day though.
