Running v Cycling

Posted: 16/05/2015 at 10:54

The hour record for cycling is about 2.5 times the hour record for running, so that's one possible answer.

I think for a non-competitive event like the one mentioned it might make more sense to compare cycling to walking. For me a brisk walk is about 4 mph, the same level of effort on a bicycle is probably about 12 mph.

How can the Edinburgh Marathon be the fastest?

How is the SSS worked out?

The SSS is a difficulty score based on how easy or difficult it was to run a quick time in a given race. The harder it was to run a quick time, the higher the SSS score. The way it is worked out is by looking at people's times in a particular race and comparing it against their previous performances. As a very simplified example, if 100 people run in race A one weekend, and the same 100 run in race B over the same distance the next weekend, if, on average, the field is 60 seconds slower in race B than race A, there was clearly some factor (be it weather conditions, accuracy of course measurement, type of terrain, competitiveness of the field, how hilly the course was etc) which caused times to be slower. Therefore the SSS for race B will be higher than the SSS for race A.

Sometimes the system doesn’t have enough data to run the calculations properly – for example if there were only a small number taking part and only a few of them have profiles so we have limited access to previous performance data. In this situation the system gives a notional value of 1.0.

How do you target a race, when you think a pb is definitely off the cards?

a) pace someone else, help them get a PB

or

b) run it about 90% effort, so not flat out but a bit quicker than a training run

There are maps for pollution. A lot of pollution comes from cars, lorries, etc so if you're running during rush hour that might be a problem.

One hit wonders...

What is your oldest item of clothing you still wear?

I have a bowler hat that used to belong to my grandfather, no idea how old it is - could easily be 40 or 50 years.

I don't wear it very often though, I'm not a hipster.

Chatting up.

Have you tried looking at local groups on meetup.com ?

There are singles groups on there, but also all sorts of activities not specifically aimed at singles. At least it'll get you out of the house if nothing else.

USING phone for pseudo Fat timing?

Thanks tom and gideon your answers are probably best. How would one see how many frames are in the movie they filmed? The pressure mat sounds interesting but 2 of them is probably still quite expensive (more than 200 once you include a stop watch with an external trigger)

Any half-decent video editor will display the time in hours:minuteseconds:frames. GoPro Studio (free) does, as does Adobe Premier Elements (fairly cheap), plenty of other software available.

USING phone for pseudo Fat timing?

I'm not aware of anything off the shelf that's less than a couple of grand. If you want a DIY solution I'd suggest a stopwatch with an external trigger and a pressure mat (from a burglar alarm).

An alternative if you want accuracy and don't mind some inconvenience is to use a video camera (or film it with your phone) and then count the number of frames between start and finish. At 30 frames per second the accuracy over 10 seconds would be around 1/300 (i.e. 0.33%).
