I've committed to the Yorkshire Marathon on 12th October.

Just 4 months to go!

Edinburgh Marathon 2014

I don't usually run for a pb, but yesterday's Edinburgh's marathon was one of those target races. As such I generally wasn't encouraging those who were struggling towards the end. I just had my head down but ignoring others didn't feel so good.

Got my pb, and am grateful for the fellow runner who give me encouragement even when I didn't know I needed it. He clearly saw something in my demeanour that I haven't noticed.

Back to running for pleasure next week and supporting anyone I can. Bring it on.

Guys, are any of you brave enough to admit

As a bloke, being beaten by a lady is harder to take than another man, however when it comes to the final few feet if there's little room for two to across the line I'd give way to the lady every time.

Saying that I'm never competing for podium positions!

1st Marathon Race Strategy

I was talking to an elite runner this week (think top 150 in this year's VLM) who says 'banked time is invoiced later'.

Meaning going off to fast will have detrimental effect later on.

My own experience two weeks ago seems to prove the point nicely.

First half 2:06, second 2:27.

As a two lap course, I can't blame the terrain!

Shiftwork Training and Running

Simon, I too work shifts but sadly I'm unable to offer any great advice as I struggle to adapt any particular plan to my work/life balance.

However, I do you an ultra runner, currently training to do some bonkers 100 mile event this year who like yourself works for an emergency service. He'll be out the door at 04:30, do a long run (think marathon distances) before going to work. This way he maximizes family time with his young children.

I've no idea how he's able to maintain such a punishing lifestyle, but somehow he does.

Ann Knox,

I've just logged onto the EMF site and my race number has been assigned.

15151 for me

How many years of running before attempting a marathon

Posted: 14/04/2014 at 23:34

Started running 3 Jan 2013 and did first marathon at Portsmouth in 22nd December.

As has been said before, it's whatever feels right for you, only you'll know if you are ready. For me, doing a 13 mile run on a Friday followed by a 20 on the Sunday in early November suggested (to me) that I could do it.

I was less prepared for my second marathon (6 April) and now have a niggling IT Band knee issue. Hoe hum!

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Another reason to have an official recorded finishing time will be validation of completed marathons for the 100 club.

Just 98 to go for me

Running belt - long runs/marathon

I used the wife's Salomon XR Energy Belt for the first time last week. As I was running an organised marathon with frequent water-stations I didn't use the water bottles, just for gel storage.

So comfortable I literally forgot it was there!
