I had problems with my IT band last year and earlier this year (on different knees).
The first time I ignored the symptoms until they got so bad I broke down after a 15 mile run. It took several weeks for the pain to go. After seeing sports therapist I started stretching properly before every run. I bought some new trainers and did some cross training and also began running off road as I think that the problem was exhaserbated by running on cambered roads and footpaths.
I suspect you need to ease off on the running for a few weeks until the inflammation has completely gone and build back up gradually. Try an ice pack on the affected area after a run to keep down the swelling. One legged squats will build up the stabilising muscles too.
When it recurred in the other knee I bought new trainers and started stretching properly again and the problem went. I've been free of all symptoms for 7 months now.
