Brighton Marathon 2015

Amazing running above, well done all - wished I could get those kind of splits. 

Well today was better than I expected managed a very comfortable 15.75 miles no great speed ran it in 2:40 and felt like I could have gone on.

Hopefully the training will go to plan next week and the HM next weekend should be a good test for race pace.

The self doubt is starting to fade a bit after today.

Thanks Wenterrapin, I have cleared the day tomorrow so plan to do between 13-15 miles and see how I feel.  the stupid thing is I trained for London last year in 11 weeks and my base fitness was no where near the level it is now.  Will let you know how I get on tomorrow with my very slow long run.

Hi All

Haven't been on here for ages, well life has thrown in a few curve balls over the last few weeks with illness, work, family problems etc and unfortunately running has been the last of my priorities. 

The longest run I have done since the new year was 10 miles at race pace two weeks ago and although I have been maintaining 4 runs a week and a boxercise class my long runs have just had to go on hold. 

Realistically can I still get match fit for Brighton in 9 weeks?

I have a half marathon next week which will be a good indicator and have booked a 20 mile race for mid march.

I hate starting something that I don't finish but I am suffering with real self doubt that I can get ready in time.

What do you all think

To be honest I think somewhere around 4:30 would be good and is fairly realistic with a consistent 2hr HM time.  I run with my Mum and we really enjoy running events together, we start together and finish together and never put any pressure on each other.

I like the idea of the 14 week runners world plan will google it now.  We are on holiday for 10 nights over Christmas so running maybe limited a bit.

Well its been a while since I have been on here life has seriously got in the way but the running has been good over the last couple of weeks but I think I have caught up with all the posts on here.  Hope anyone suffering injuries/illness get better soon and well done to all those training

I feel seriously confused as to when to start training, I only found out that I was running VMLM this year on the 28th January and so the training plan was obvious. 

I have absolutely no idea when to start training properly for Brighton.  I do a long run of between 10-14 miles each week with 3 shorter runs (varying distance depending on life!) during the week.

When do I start marathon training and what plan should I follow?

Hi All

I am going to official say hello but have been lurking for a while.  Myself and my mum are both entered for Brighton in April.  We ran London in April this year and mainly run half marathons but after doing London this year have decided to do one big city marathon each year. 

We have a hotel booked for the Saturday night and will probably come down by train as I normally feel pretty sick after long runs and would be the driver for the homeward journey.

So my first question (I will probably have loads) what is the baggage collection like post marathon?  We were through baggage collection in about 10 minutes in London.  The reason I ask is so that we can plan return trains etc.

Oh and my next question how far is the start and finish from the train station?

Very excited now and have received our training t-shirts in the post.

What do you like to find in a race?

I completely agree with AndyRuns

  • Sports capped water bottles ideally 250ml size (cuts down on cost and waste)
  • MEDAL - an absolute definite
  • Cheerful marshals
  • Posted race pack and number
  • Water at the end
  • Sensible start time, I will happily travel to a well priced event offering a medal but as somebody else posted hate getting up stupidly early to travel for a 9am or 10am start

Sounds like you have a realistic time in mind bet you will do it in about 2.15.  Good Luck, let us know how you get on.

Earphones in races

Cardiff HM was an absolute nightmare for this.  Earphone wearers who were completely oblivious to other runners around them zigzagging across the route fiddling about with the device and then stopping to look for friends behind them.  One girl almost tripped me up 4 times and on the forth occasion got a pretty hard shove in her back luckily I passed her and didn't see her again.  When walking back to the car after we had finished one runner had earphones in and had an ambulance within a metre of him but couldn't hear it because of his music.  I think inexperience race runners using their device/music are the main danger, they don't keep left or move over for faster runners.  I am not a quick runner (2hr HM) and stay left as much as possible and move back in if I have past another runner just common courtesy.  Earphones are by biggest gripe at all races, why can't they enjoy the atmosphere and experience of the event.
