LL50 - AARRGHHHHH, what have I done?!?!

Posted: 02/09/2014 at 08:52

Well I've gone and done it now. After much procrastination I have taken the plunge and entered the Lakeland 50 and hopefully by the end of July next year I shall be able to call myself an ultra marathon runner.

For anyone who is interested I am writing a blog about my journey from 5k to ultra marathon at;

www.runfattyrun.org

Although it is mainly there as a reminder to me why I am doing it and what I hope to achieve I also hope that other first timers can empathise with it and we can support each other through the months ahead until we join the ultra club.

From 5k to Ultra

I have been floating around reading up on ultras wondering whether a social runner who has only run up to half marathons could take the step up. I have found the response to any questions I have had have been amazing from the ultra community. During the process of weighing up if I had such an event in me I started to put my thoughts down on paper (tablet). Now that I have decided to put my name in the hat I have decided to put these ramblings into a blog (something that I have never done and never dreamed I would do).

Please don't feel obliged to read this as it is as much for my benefit as anybody else's. If you do have any interest then I hope that it reminds the more experienced about taking their first steps into the ultrasphere and if there are any other potential first timers then perhaps we can hold each other's hands through the experience. If you do have any interest then apparently follow my adventure over the coming months by clicking 'follow' at the bottom of the front page.

Run Wales,
So that's what has happened to my trees, I knew something was wrong with them!
Since that is the case then there could only be one thing that could possibly take my mind off this disaster as well......

Surely that wouldn't make a difference at this stage? I didn't even think about that being a problem!

With the entries ending tomorrow, how long are they expected to deliberate on who gets put forward to boot camp? I say that everyone on this thread should be a shoe in!

Ahh procrastination, lager and cake, that sounds familiar! Best of luck for 2013 Tom, hopefully we can both reach the 4.30 goal by the middle of the year.

Cheers for the advice Redhead. I certainly hope to enjoy the first experience over killing myself for a time in the process and sometimes need to remind myself of that!

I live in the North East so the obvious one would be Sunderland as a spring event but have to say I am also tempted by Manchester as I have family over there and also Edinburgh as I have run the half up there and know how flat it is!

I am now going to have a look at the schedules you have recommended and hopefully this shall lkeep pushing me in the right direction to actually just go ahead and take the plunge.

I think it would be pretty exciting just to get to the bootcamp stage! To have access to coaches who can set you in the right direction for this type of event would be an amazing experience. Now like Heather I must put this to the back of my mind now and try to keep my expectations in check. Did they tell you how many people entered last year Knight Rider?

Hope this is the right place for a bit of advice. I have been burying my head in the sand about doing a marathon and just sticking to running to keep fit and completing a few half marathons. I think it is now time to take the plunge at the age of 37 to suck in the doubts and just get on with it. My problem now is what sort of goal to aim for so that I can start to plan a training schedule. Through people's experience could they advise on what sort of goal time I should be aiming for. I have run three halfs that have all been between 1.45 and 1.49 but had little left to offer at the end. My initial thought is that I should be aiming for around 4.30 and would appreciate the thoughts of anyone who has been in a similar position.
