When to take beta blocker on race day

If it helps, all the research says that if you're properly rested beforehand, a broken night before a race makes no difference to your performance. Good luck, hope you sort it out.

Sandstone Trail Challenge (33miles)

Thanks Daniel, this is really helpful as this year will be my first time at this event. Looking forward to it although anticipating a run/walk strategy will be my best bet to reach the finish in one piece

Chester Half Marathon

Hello, this is home race and I'm very excited....love it! I think the Park and Ride on Wrexham Road would be a good bet. Total Fitness is a great gym, nice facilities, cafe etc and probably less than a mile from the finish. Interested to see how the new route pans out - a bit less of a climb at the finish maybe? Hope you all have a great day and good times

Half marathon training advice

Hopefully, you've been resting as the only thing you can do in the two weeks prior to a race that will affect your performance on the day is injure yourself.

I don't understand why you would put your body through a half marathon at race pace in training? You ran the race before the race....

Hope you're fit and well in time for race day.

Progression runs vs LSR

Thanks guys, I think these type of runs have got me doing more race pace miles which can only be good for fitness and confidence. Interesting what Roadwarrior says about shorter and faster working better than longer and slower. I've gone for longer and slower in the past, so will wait to see how this plan turns out.

You're right about there being little time left for improvement Ja5onW. I've trained hard since January, but suffering from a crisis of confidence as race day approaches :-/

Progression runs vs LSR

I'm not sure whether the correct term is progression or progressive but hopefully you know what I mean - when you gradually build the pace of the run as you go on, so you end up running faster than you started.

What experience do people have of these type of  runs? I have always separated my long slow runs and my tempo runs, but these runs seem to combine both. I'm looking to improve my time over half marathon and have about a month to go - would this type of run - say over 9 or 10 miles - be better than simply knocking out 12 or 13 miles at a slower pace.

Hi Victor

A few years ago I trained like a mad thing, achieved some really good times (for me) and then, somewhat predictably, got injured. Then I got depressed because I was injured and ended up not running for nearly 2 years. All that is behind me and I now train sensibly, but I find that every time I start to train more intensely it's as if my body and mind conspire to stop me and I'm plagued by all sorts of aches, pains and negative thoughts. In the last half marathon I ran, I nearly pulled out at about 9 miles with all this going on. Any tips on how to overcome this - I know it's all in my head?!

Mr Puffy's advice is sound. Last year I registered really quickly on the Saturday but then made the mistake of looking round the expo and leaving exhausted and dehydrated about 3 hours later. That old chestnut 'stay off your feet' is a good one

Trying not to mind about this. After all, it's only a hobby...not like it's my life or anything
