Rome 2012

Nah, no '26.2 MT technical Tee' for me I'm afraid, just my bog standard yellow & blue Bitton Road Runners club vest... BTW Liz is racing the Bath Half tomorrow so I may even get to say hello to MY...

And William Bloke? Sad to say that it's nothing more than the name of a 1996 Billy Bragg album that I kind of adopted as my alias on a couple of forums. Even my Bristol Rovers shirts used to say 'W Bloke 69' on the back...

Gold for me: Sub-3hrs; Silver sub-3:04; Bronze sub-3:10

Rest day today - just time for a bit of last minute pre-holiday shopping...

I'm running in the Bath Half Marathon tomorrow. I made myself a promise that when I've run it 10 times then won't run it again. Tomorrow is my 6th... My problem is that I've got a bad habit of thrashing out a good run the week before I run a marathon. I can get away with running a fast 10K the week before, but not a Half Marathon... I can just about get away with running Bath at 6:47-6:50/mi pace but nothing quicker, although I know I can run a lot quicker than that; even my short sessions are getting faster. I was running along yesterday, thinking "God, this feels slow" then looked at my Garmin & realised that I was trotting along at 6:35/mi!!!. However, I have to be strict with myself & remember that the Rome Marathon is my A-goal this Spring. I can always chase Half Marathon PBs later on this year...

Monday is a self-imposed rest day, Tuesday is packing day, then we fly out on Wednesday!! Thursday morning will see me putting in an early morning jog around Circus Maximus - I can't wai!

OneTit - Druids Den is at 28 Via San Martino ai Monti, & Druids Rock is at 1 Piazza Esquilino...

I'll be the bald bloke with a knackered body & a 'give me beer expression' on his face...

Only a week to ge before we fly out - how excited am am???  We're flying out on Wednesday then heading to the expo to pick up my number first thing on Thursday morning (which also gives me a chance to nose around the EUR area)

Are we going to try to meet up anywhere before and/or after the marathon? If we meet up post race, I would suggest that we make it somewhere in the evening so that we can all have a chance to return to some resemblance of human beings first...

Onetit: They do satchets/tubs of porridge in other flavours too - including plain...

I had a strange conversation with Mrs Bloke last night that revolved in trying to save up for a really good holiday. Of course to save up enough money we need a long term goal, thus giving us the time to have a really good, no expenses spared time away, in a city that we'd both love to visit, and of course there has to be a marathon involved too... My intention is to run London in the spring of 2013 & Abingdon in the Autumn of 2012, so, with all those things taken into consideration - I'm virtually decided on the Florence Marathon in November 2014...

Crazy Lady - I always have porridge the morning of a race. And because I don't trust people to make it the way I like it, or I want to be 100% sure that I will have porridge for breakfast, I always have one of these in my race kit...

H. It's at times like this that we all realise just how fragile life is...

Ran my last proper pre-taper long run this morning. 18 miles at an easy pace, with Mrs Bloke cycling alongside as usual, through cold rain & even colder rain... Had to make an unplanned stop after 8 miles and, although I never buy food from there, I was rather glad to be able to take advantage of the golden arches this morning... A few post run aches & pains but, thankfully, nothing serious to worry about... Mrs Bloke is cooking a nice pile of roast veg (no meat) for tea & a banana loaf for dessert, before we go for a nice gentle swim this evening. After that, I'll attack the coffee machine & she'll play badminton for an hour (I'm not allowed this close to a marathon) before we head to the pub for an hour...

The coming week is going to seem strange. Mon-Fri no run is longer than 6 miles & on Sunday I'm running in the Bath Half Marathon at an easy pace... We'll probably do some sightseeing afterwards, but I'm unsure whether Mrs Bloke will see the irony if I take her to see the Roman Baths...

Onetit - running dvd recommendations: The Long Run, Saint Ralph, Spirit of the Marathon, Running to the Limits, or Running the Sahara...

Here's a strange thought - Onetit, Elizabeth Ellis 3, and myself have all been happily posting away on this forum since 14/15 of May last year...!!! Where has the time gone?

Last night: 2 mile warm up, 5K race (18:08 - 2 secs off my PB), 1.5 mile cool down. Lunchtime today: 8.15 miles in 58:49 (avg. 7:13/mi)  I must admit, I'm really enjoying my running at the moment - it all feels 'easy' if you know what I mean...

I bought a DVD called 'Room In Rome'. If you get it, don't watch it until the kids go to bed...

Panos - As one of the race sponsors is Gatorade then it'd be a fair assumption to say that's the sports drink that'll be on offer. I expect it'll be the orange flavour (orange seems to be the main flavour regardless of make) but don't hold me to that...

Onetit - The Lazio fixture on the 18th has been 'flipped' and they are now playing away to Catania. AS Roma are now playing at the Stadio Olympico on the 18th against Genoa. The cheapest tickets I've found thus far are £28 each...
