Rome 2012

I had a strange conversation with Mrs Bloke last night that revolved in trying to save up for a really good holiday. Of course to save up enough money we need a long term goal, thus giving us the time to have a really good, no expenses spared time away, in a city that we'd both love to visit, and of course there has to be a marathon involved too... My intention is to run London in the spring of 2013 & Abingdon in the Autumn of 2012, so, with all those things taken into consideration - I'm virtually decided on the Florence Marathon in November 2014...

Crazy Lady - I always have porridge the morning of a race. And because I don't trust people to make it the way I like it, or I want to be 100% sure that I will have porridge for breakfast, I always have one of these in my race kit...

H. It's at times like this that we all realise just how fragile life is...

Ran my last proper pre-taper long run this morning. 18 miles at an easy pace, with Mrs Bloke cycling alongside as usual, through cold rain & even colder rain... Had to make an unplanned stop after 8 miles and, although I never buy food from there, I was rather glad to be able to take advantage of the golden arches this morning... A few post run aches & pains but, thankfully, nothing serious to worry about... Mrs Bloke is cooking a nice pile of roast veg (no meat) for tea & a banana loaf for dessert, before we go for a nice gentle swim this evening. After that, I'll attack the coffee machine & she'll play badminton for an hour (I'm not allowed this close to a marathon) before we head to the pub for an hour...

The coming week is going to seem strange. Mon-Fri no run is longer than 6 miles & on Sunday I'm running in the Bath Half Marathon at an easy pace... We'll probably do some sightseeing afterwards, but I'm unsure whether Mrs Bloke will see the irony if I take her to see the Roman Baths...

Onetit - running dvd recommendations: The Long Run, Saint Ralph, Spirit of the Marathon, Running to the Limits, or Running the Sahara...

Here's a strange thought - Onetit, Elizabeth Ellis 3, and myself have all been happily posting away on this forum since 14/15 of May last year...!!! Where has the time gone?

Last night: 2 mile warm up, 5K race (18:08 - 2 secs off my PB), 1.5 mile cool down. Lunchtime today: 8.15 miles in 58:49 (avg. 7:13/mi)  I must admit, I'm really enjoying my running at the moment - it all feels 'easy' if you know what I mean...

I bought a DVD called 'Room In Rome'. If you get it, don't watch it until the kids go to bed...

Panos - As one of the race sponsors is Gatorade then it'd be a fair assumption to say that's the sports drink that'll be on offer. I expect it'll be the orange flavour (orange seems to be the main flavour regardless of make) but don't hold me to that...

Onetit - The Lazio fixture on the 18th has been 'flipped' and they are now playing away to Catania. AS Roma are now playing at the Stadio Olympico on the 18th against Genoa. The cheapest tickets I've found thus far are £28 each...

Really feeling for you H, it must be a complete gutter...

Thrashed out another PB yesterday, this time for a 10K - 37:15!!! I must admit, I was gobsmacked when I crossed the line & looked at my Garmin, I seriously hadn't even expected to get anywhere near my previous best, especially with the mega mileage week that I'd just put in, but to knock 29 seconds off was truly astounding...!

I've got a 5K race tomorrow. I'm hoping to get somewhere near my PB for that - if only so that I can steal the third place for the series trophy (shush, don't tell the other guy). Then after that, like you all, it's taper time - a mid-week 'long' of 10 miles & a weekend 'long' of 18 - and trying not to get too restless...

20 days until race day!!!

Mahoosive mileage this week & my quads are very definately not my friends now...

22 miles on Sunday, 3 miles on Monday, 10 mile hill rep session on Tuesday, 10.5 miles on Wednesday, 18 miles on Thursday, & 8.2 miles today...!! Tomorrow is most definately a rest day!! We're off to the Cotswolds to see the in-laws & so that I can race a 10K on Sunday... Low mileage planned for next week (well, lower mileage anyway) with a 5K race planned for Tuesday just to shoe-horn in another short speed session...

Looking forward to all that pizza, pasta, & chianti in Rome. Not long now...

Yes, John, I've paid for one. Appparantly you pick it up at the same time as your race pack...

Talking of picking up race packs, I happened to be chatting to a chap who's done Rome & he heartily recommends a) picking up your race pack as early in the morning as possible on either the Thursday or the Friday, due to the queues, and b) take the time to have a look at some of the buildings in the EUR district, if fascist architecture ticks your boxes...

An English pub? Surely, and to paraphrase a song, when in Rome we should do as the Romans do...?

Did my longest long slow run today (22 miles) and felt fairly good, although not after deciding to up the ante & race the pace for the last few miles, finishing in a flat out sprint... Average pace for the total distance was a little slower than planned (7:39/mi) but, as the wife pointed out, there was a lot of hills in the route that I chose & the pace would have still seen me finish a marathon in 3hr 20... !!

One more hard week of workouts then I can begin to taper...

Peaks? What peaks? I'd call that pretty much fairly flat 1T...

You should see the profile for my next Marathon in October: EEEK!!!
