Sequins at the ready!

Posted: 17/10/2013 at 15:49

Back again! I've been on holiday in the States for a couple of weeks and going through Strictly withdrawals, so glad I've caught up now

This year seems better all round, better dancers, much better costumes, even Dave Arch and his wonderful, wonderful orchestra aren't committing quite so many crimes against music.

Julien is very annoying but I really like his dance partner, which mitigates the annoyingness slightly. I love the Hairy Biker guy, he's a terrible dancer but he's hilarious and Karen is my new favourite female pro while Natalie is injured. Kevin from Grimsby is my new favourite male pro

Natalie, Ashley and Sophie are my front runners. I think the judges are being overly harsh with their ciriticism of Rachel - it really annoys me when they have to go through this story arc with at least one very good contestant each year.

No celeb that makes me want to throw something at the TV. I wasn't expecting to like Abby much but I've been able to ignore her so far (apart from those blinding Tippex-ed white teeth!). Her and her partner look like a pair of dancing cyborgs, good looking and good dancers, but no chemistry, no personality and just bland bland bland.

Sequins at the ready!

I thought the celebrities dresses on opening night looked a lot better than usual, perhaps Julian has been lending a hand?

I'm having the same problem getting this thread to stay in the Followed Threads section

Sequins at the ready!

Hi Everyone!

So glad someone has started a Strictly thread already

I'm gutted that I missed out on applying for tickets, I thought I had a couple more weeks. Oh well ...

Sad that Vincent, Flavia and Natalie aren't joining this year. Is Erin still there? I went out on Saturday night so only saw half the show (I need to start planning my social life around Strictly for the rest of Autumn)

Djokovic to win

Posted: 08/07/2013 at 10:24

Arguably Andy Murray decided "to get fit" when he was in the world's top rankings, yesterday much was being made of the improvement in his game since he made the decision. Becker commenting that a few years ago Murray was "a talented player" but unfit and Barker saying that you could see his dedication to improving his game in the way he's transformed his body shape.

Anyway, well done Murray  I was also impressed with Djokovic's gracious speech at the end of the match.

Ok, my biggest bugbear at the moment is the misuse of 'impact' to mean 'effect'. Effect is a perfectly good word as both noun and verb, but formulations such as 'how does this impact you?' mean nothing and are extremely ugly.

I think that is because they don't know the difference between 'effect' and 'affect' so avoid the issue by using 'impact'

I would be interested to know how many new fathers took more than 2 weeks paternity leave.

Apparently from 2015 there will be something called Shared Parental Leave. There will be up to a year's leave after the birth of the child, the leave can be divided between both parents and both parents can be off work at the same time. Seems like a good idea to me!

Wedding Present

I wouldn't give cash .... the whole idea of the 'wedding gift' is to help the new couple kit out their new love-nest. Its not a part of the actual wedding itself so if they already have their new home kitted out, then why should you feel'honour bound' to stump up anything, especially cold cash ... all seems just a little too cynical to me.

I've got a lot of friends getting married in the next year, the majority have sent very politely worded requests for monetary gifts because they don't yet have a house to kit out with wedding presents! I expect that this will become more common as you need a 10-25% deposit for a mortgage.

I think its all about how you ask for things. The invites I've received have been along the lines of "we consider you celebrating our wedding with us to be gift enough, but if you would like to give us anything else we would be very grateful for any contribution towards our savings pot for a house deposit". I'd rather give a gift that will be useful than get hung up on choosing something thoughtful, if I wanted to make a thoughtful gesture I'd be more likely to ask them if they needed any help with wedding planning.

There is so much loopy etiquette around weddings though ... things I'd never have thought to be offended by are apparently big no-nos, so I'm sure that I'll offend all the friends and family when we get married

This will make the women laugh...
