Diets On Trial (Preview)

Not all fashionable diet books are flawed - here's our digested read of the best

Drop a dress size. Double your energy. Two weeks to a better body. Or bad breath and gallons of cabbage soup… diets tend to promise one thing and deliver another. With new programmes being introduced all the time, sometimes it's difficult to sort the desirable from the disastrous. Even if you're not trying to lose weight, these five popular diets include healthy principles that are perfect for runners too.

These top tips are a sneak preview of the full article RW+ from the new issue of Runner's World magazine. If you'd like to subscribe, you can see this article, along with all our premium content – just click here to save 30% on your subscription and get instant access right now.

The Abs Diet (Rodale, £7.99)
Take-away tip
Allow yourself a weekly indulgence - this will make it easier to avoid bingeing on unhealthy treats.

Carol Vorderman's Detox for Life (Virgin Books, £10.99)
Take away tip
Aim to drink at least two litres of water every day, and when you're exercising drink an extra 500ml per hour of exercise to stay well hydrated.

Food Doctor Everyday Diet (Dorling Kindersley, £12.99)
Take away tip
Marber's advice to always eat breakfast is excellent. "When you start your day with a healthy, filling breakfast, you dramatically increase your chances of eating healthily throughout the day," says Bean. "You also fuel your body so you feel happy and energised for the rest of the day."

The Low GI Diet (hodder mobius, £6.99)
Take away tip
Filling up on fibre-rich low-GI foods with a high water content, such as fruit, vegetables and legumes, will control your hunger and appetite naturally.

The South Beach Diet(Headline, £6.99)
Take away tip
Have a healthy mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack, whether you're hungry or not. Try hummus with raw vegetables or a low-fat yoghurt. "This principle is good for runners because it helps to stabilise blood sugar levels, refuel depleted muscles and stave off hunger," says Bean.
