England referee Howard Webb celebrates with a Y for Yorkshire

The historic streets of York are to set the scene for a brand-new marathon in October this year.

The Plusnet Yorkshire marathon is set to be the biggest sporting event to hit the region. Today marks the countdown to the race and will see famous faces - including England referee Howard Webb, pictured - celebrate the arrival of the event by making a ‘Y’ for ‘Yorkshire’, the new symbol of the marathon.

Runner's World is proud to be one of the official media partners of the race, which is being staged by Jane Tomlinson’s For All Events, which already hosts Leeds, York, Hull and Pennine-Lancashire 10Ks and the popular Leeds Half Marathon. The company was founded by the Tomlinson family in the name of late campaigner Jane Tomlinson CBE, who raised over two million pounds for charity in her lifetime by undertaking awe-inspiring endurance challenges despite battling with terminal cancer.

The debut of the race in the centre of Yorkshire is all the more significant after the county's medal haul of seven golds, two silvers and three bronze at the London Olympics in 2012.

Double gold Paralympian Hannah Cockcroft said: “Last summer proved that Yorkshire was the best county for sport in Britain and now that Yorkshire has its very own marathon, people can come and share in the legacy that was created.

“I know that this event will be fantastic fun, bringing people together and allowing them to achieve lifetime goals at the same time as raising money for some amazing charities.”

For All Events’ Mike Tomlinson said The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon would become a major highlight of the UK’s sporting calendar and a flagship event for the organisation.

“We’re really excited about the new Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon. We launched the Leeds 10K seven years ago now and we’ve been thinking for a long time about putting on a long distance event in Yorkshire – and this is it!

“It’s taken a huge amount of planning but we think it will be really special.  In York we have a city with amazingly spectacular scenery, but one that is also extremely flat which should make for a really fast course."

The Yorkshire Marathon will take place on Sunday 20 October and will take runners on a scenic route through the major city landmarks and into surrounding countryside and villages around the Vale of York. Runner's World will be pacing the event, with 7-minute mile, 8-minute mile, 9-minute mile, 10-minute mile and 11-minute mile pacers to help you reach your marathon PB.
