Hard Training: Dawn Critchell (Hilly)

Dawn's PBs are tumbling fast. She's run a 3:26 marathon in the last year. Can she hit sub-3:15 in October? Former London Marathon winner Mike Gratton has the tips...

Background:

Dawn has been running since 1997 and races approximately 25 times a year. She runs all distances except track, and runs mostly road races but actually prefers cross-country. She also competes at sprint triathlon.

PBs:

(All achieved in the last year)
5K: 20:40
10K: 42:06
10 miles: 1:10
Half-marathon: 1:34
20 miles: 2:26
Marathon 3:26.

Target:

To run 3:15 at Cardiff Marathon on October 3

Sample Training:

Mon: 6 miles easy and/or - hour circuit session. Rest if tired
Tue: am: 3 miles easy; pm: 7-mile road run with club
Wed: 10 miles steady
Thu: 60 mins turbo trainer.
Fri: 60 mins on turbo trainer followed by 4 miles fartlek on treadmill
Sat: 5 miles easy, 1 mile swim.
Sun: 17 miles long slow distance

Mike thinks:

To run her target marathon time, Dawn needs to develop more speed endurance. This can be done by dropping one of the turbo sessions and doing an interval session such as 16 x 400m with 100m jog recoveries.

We'll introduce some longer reps at marathon speed – maybe six alternate miles at 10K pace and marathon pace after a mile warm-up jog, plus a mile jog to finish.

If time allows, we'll introduce five-mile recovery runs on three days each week and lengthen the long run to 20 miles.

Good luck all.

I'd be interested to hear Mike's thoughts on Hilly's "resting" regimes! :-)

Good luck Hilly, I know you have had your fair share of injuries lately, I hope this is all behind you and I wish continued improvement.
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 11:42

Good luck Hilly - it will be interesting reading as my times and aims are the same, although I'm leaving my next marathon attempt to next year...
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 11:49

Good luck, Hilly!
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 11:51

Great stuff!! Hilly's 10k PB is similar to mine, but I have trouble maintaining it, so I'll be watching with interest :o)

Good luck peeps!
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 11:51

Interesting times there Hilly.

5K - 6:40 miling
10K - 6:46
10M - 7:00
1/2 - 7:10
Mar - 7:51

To hit you marathon time you need to do 7:26 miling.
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 12:03

Good luck! This will make interesting reading as my targets are similar to your current pbs and I too lack speed endurance.

Looking forward to the thread ...

I'll try to keep up with you Dawn - my first marathon is approaching in October and with a recent Half of 1.31 I'm pushing for a 3.30 and was keeping my fingers crossed - now this thread will hopefully offer some much needed advice.

Thanks everyone-how nervous am I having all this on show!:o)

Bryan-rest-what's that word?!

Right Mike as you know I've got an injury which I've sort of been resting!

I am about to pick up running again starting tomorrow night with a 5k race. I'm not going to race it flat out as this might not be good for recent injury.

This weeks training is planned as this, what do you think?

Mon-did 15 miles hard hilly cycle
Tues-800m swim
Wed-5k race
Thurs-10 miles steady
Fri-5 miles marathon pace plus 1hr circuits
Sat-5 miles easy
Sun-17 miles easy

That's one hell of a comeback from injury , Hilly - 5k race, 5 mile MP run and a 2hr+ run in 5 days! Hope it works out.
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 17:34

Hilly-I agree with BR I would be weary it seems too much too soon for my liking!!!
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 17:39

Hi Hilly, Looks very ambitious....do the 5km and see how the injury is and report back Thur. and we can go from there.
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 17:55

Hilly, awesome! I think there is potential and you can definately do it!

Again, been at that level too and achieved the same goal :)

Posted: 08/06/2004 at 18:29

Ok, I'll do the 5k and report how leg is.

Thanks for the vote of confidence URR. I try to believe I can do it as long as I can stay injury free, which seems to be my biggest hurdle this year so far!

good luck hilly

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow at the fastest 5k in the west( shameless plug for Yeovilton), hope you'll still speak to us now that you are famous.
Lin C & Juggler

Hilly - best of luck. Cheering for you. Make absolutely sure Mike G keeps that back of yours in one piece, yes?
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 20:13

(only cause you run a tad slower when it's broken, mind!)
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 20:14

Good luck Hilly,

Thats some training for a comeback,

Very interesting thread.

Posted: 08/06/2004 at 20:31

Lin/Juggler see you tomorrow! If I had your speed Lin I'd be laughing!

The comeback isn't really a comeback as I've still been running up until a week ago and have done cv work every day. The injury is more annoying than serious as it stops faster running. Gentle running is ok. The physio said I could still run, but to ease off if painful. As most of you who know me on these forums are aware I'm a little impatient with injuries!

:o)

I wouldn't do a 5k though if I thought it would make it worse.
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 20:58

Good luck Hilly - will be following this with interest.
Posted: 08/06/2004 at 21:03

Good Luck Hilly

Good luck Hilly, I've got very similar pb's so I'll be watching this with interest. Hope the 5k goes ok.

Good luck for Yeovil tonight hilly!

Unfortunately, I can't make this one but at least I can say I met you before you were famous ;-)

Best wishes with your training Hilly.

Supporting you all the way.

Will be sorry not to see you tonight NE. Hoping to do next month's too, so maybe see you there.

Not sure of pace for tonight, so I'm just going to see how it goes. Had over an hour massage (self massage with scholl massager) on injured leg last night and it's feeling quite loose today. I just hope I don't come last!
Posted: 09/06/2004 at 10:08

Best of luck Hilly!
Posted: 09/06/2004 at 10:28

Hilly, do a very long warm up jog and very light stretching so you don't agrevate the injury - this hot weather will help.

Mike
Posted: 09/06/2004 at 11:06

hilly - I take it the Enduroman marathon won't be part of your training!

Lurking with great interest.
Posted: 09/06/2004 at 11:52

Lots of luck with your training hilly. Will be following your progress here.
Posted: 09/06/2004 at 12:57

Good Luck Hilly
Posted: 09/06/2004 at 14:13

hilly, I'm not sure who's going to have the hardest time ahead you or Mike.
Just listen to the advice given :-)

Train & race well
