Well done to the Run to Live Surrey Badger Half-Marathon – a new race that definitely gets top marks.

This multi-terrain race on September 7 started in Leatherhead town centre, where the crowd was invited to sing the national anthem before setting off along a fast, flat course along the foot of the Surrey Hills, packed with bridleways, scenic twists and turns, and latterly some lush forest trails inside Norbury Park.

The route was well planned and efficiently marked, although support along the way was sparse – but the goody bag at the finish, which contained an Asics water bottle, three energy bars, a Kit Kat, water, a milkshake, a voucher for free gait analysis and a T-shirt, made the £17 entry fee seem like a bargain.

Marco De Freitas was first man in 1:24:46 while Lesley Whiley was first woman in 1:32:18.
