Polar RS800CX
The most expensive device on test. Designed for cycling, running and swimming, its different functions will attract multi-sport athletes. It gives data on heart rate, cadence, calories burned, and uses GPS to measure pace, speed and distance very accurately - although the speed function tended to go temporarily haywire under dense tree cover. And, for a device of this calibre, having to wear a separate satellite sensor on your arm is an irritation, but it does track your route for later analysis via Google Earth. Functionality is simple, and the watch switches between power saving modes depending on if the GPS is on or not. The accompanying software package is impressively thorough.
