Hi there!
A new runner here.
I want to buy a reasonably good runners watch. I have read the reviews online but still can't make my mind up.
Any ideas anyone/advice??

Do you want a HRM or just a stopwatch type watch ? The Timex Ironman watch is great, and I like Polar HRMs, but they're a bit pricey.

Thanks, I think that I would be better off with just a watch at the moment. A heart rate monitor seems a little too serious at this early stage. Plus those HRM really are quite expensive.

Timex Ironman - great. Think mine's a model called "sleek". Make sure it's got a large enough memory for lap times (mine does a 100 which allows me to record a number of runs before putting them in my training log, with splits.

Also look for one with multiple countdown timers - so you can set it up properly for interval sessions - e.g. 2 mins hard, 1 min recovery etc. - think mine has 5 of them.

Did have a Nike, which did all the same stuff and looked pretty swish (or swoosh!)but I was always worried that the strap would break - it was all moulded together and you couldn't just replace the strap. In the end a button jammed and I got the Timex, it's been fab.

Also recommend the Timex Ironman watch - it's fab. Think about getting yourself a HRM though (Polar are good as Cougs says) : the basic model doesn't need to be that expensive, you don't need anything very fancy to start with, and it's a very useful guide to how hard you're working, especially when you're starting out as a new runner, and how your fitness is developing as your heart rate drops for the same level of effort etc.

I gave up using my HRM. It's pretty hilly round here, and when I went up the hills my heart rate shot out of the top of my target goal even when i was running very comfortably up them, and I struggled to get into the zone when going downhill.

I did use it a bit to monitor my average rate for a run and compare times for similar efforts, but to be honest I reckon I can give nearly as good an indication of how hard I've run just by how it feels.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I think I will go for the Timex watch for now. Sounds though that a HRM would be of benefit in the near future though, especially if I am going to get serious about my training.

Is there a watch out there that records just minutes? So when I do a 100 minute run it say's 100 minutes and not 1hour 40minutes etc!

I want to get a watch that I can get to beep every minute or every 2 minutes, any suggestions on a watch that will do that?

There's a Timex Ironman watch that Argos are currently selling for £19.99 that has a ten lap time function but as they haven't got that model anymore they substitute it for the Ironman T56442 which has a 30 lap time function and usually retails at closer to the £40 mark.

I picked myself up one yesterday!

Most watches with a countdown timer will do that - just set it to countdown and repeat.
Some have multiple countdown timers, e.g my Timex Ironman (but they're not all the same, some only have the one timer) has about 5. This is really useful if you are doing intervals because you can set say a 3 minute session "beep" followed by a 2 minute recovery "beep", and keep repeating the whole cycle.

NB the lap function is a different - that is part of the stopwatch function and records how long different sections of your run takes.
Generally speaking the more serious a runner's watch, the more laps it will allow you to record, and the more countdown timers it will allow you to set.
I got mine from Start Fitness, they had a good selection, and the guys on the phone were very helpful.
