My wife has been running in supernova cushion 2006 model previously she wore 2005 model. the new model seem to have very little in the way of ventilation compared to the 2005 model.
Short of going back to the 2005 model has nayone any suggestions as to which cushion shoes provide good ventilation. She is suffering from blisters on the soles of her feet as thye get very hot. I wear Mizuno Wave Riders whcih seem ok!
Suggestions welcome?

LOTS OF COMPEED! I'm having a hell of a time with blisters on my big toes and they actually prevented me from finishing my run yesterday. I was advised last year to use talc to line my socks before a run, but so far this year I've failed to heed the advice. I'm running in the latest Nike air structures and they are torture on my feet, but they are the only ones to stop my overpronation!

Thanks! but whats compeed? and where can you get it from

Compeed are blister plasters that are amazing. They have them in Boots, Superdrug etc. They got me through the Microsoft Challenge this year as they take about a week to come off. Would definitely recommend them!

Thank you very for the advice, I have bought them and your right they are amazing!!

Compeed is wonderful. The important thing is to follow the instructions EXACTLY.

Dont know if this may help but ive had lots of trouble with blisters in the past. Someone recommended changing my socks to some with "coolmax" material. I could only find some on ebay, but they worked for me!!

Rub vaseline onto your feet and in between your toes before running and that should stop any friction causing blisters.

My local runing shop says that blisters are only caused by badly fitting shoes. Socks cannot prevent blisters but should compliment the fit of the shoe. That is why you should wear the same socks that you run in when trying on shoes.

I'm not sure that I believe them.

Carmen - I agree with your running shop. When I first started running I got terrible blisters: I'd bought my shoes from a JJB type sports shop. When I went to a 'proper' running shop they 'made' me buy / advised me to buy a half-size bigger - that did the trick.

I also have three pairs of shoes on the go at the minute: I run nearly every day and 'rotate' my shoes on different days(NB1220, NB854, NB854(newer)) - I think they are all slightly different fits/wear, so they 'rub' on different areas of my feet in different ways: that way my feet arn't continually chafed on the same 'pressure points' each day.

My third recommendation is to let your feet 'breathe' as much as possible. Especially after a run, get your socks off and let the air get to them. (When showering - soap up and wash your feet, especially between toes). In an office situation also pop your shoes off for a while (under the desk) - they won't smell if you wash them once a day.

Socks - I wear Thorlo XJ - heavyweight and cushioned but good. They have really thick soles (and I might move up another half-shoe size to accomodate them.

AS a Royal Marine Commando reservist and having ran endless miles and miles, the only thing i will ever say to anyone suffering blisters is to tape up the area with zinc oxide tape, the heavy duty stuff. This can be bought from St John's Ambulance website. Everyong in the forces uses it, tried and tested, over 30mile runs and more. Take the advice!

Zinc Oxide tape is good - Matthew do you have any body hair left though?

What on my feet?? it's not painful to lose a bit of hair compared to a massive blister.

I started this type of running in Nov 05, and bought a pair of Nike Impax Run trainers (£35), clocking up over 520 mi in the next 6 months, mostly on hi-mileage outings (Had'nt started reading RW at this point ...) They were comfortable & I did'nt have a single blister.
I've had 8 weeks off/on low mileage due to injury, and during that time bought a pair of Brooks Radius 6 trainers (£65) after gait analysis. To date, I've done 90 mi in them, and altho' they're cushioned and v comfortable, I've had several blisters. The worst was last Sun when I had 4 during a 10-miler ! I've worn the same padded running socks throughout.
Is this unusual ? Clearly you can't test-drive trainers exhaustively before purchase, so does one pay quite large sums for footwear and just hope they won't blister ? I should mention that I've never been prone to blisters, even during nearly 20 years in the Parachute Regt. Yes, I know about ZnO tape, but while you might expect to have to use that in boots which cost £16.50 in the late '80s, modern trainers are supposed to be 'state of the art', and I certainly hav'nt recently been carrying heavy loads over wet, uneven surfaces, over long distances and many hours. Any comments or suggestions ?

I reckon that with trainers, while you can get a really good fit, it'll never be perfect. My feet are slightly different sizes and shapes, and so it's impossible for me to buy a pair of trainers that fit both equally well. I rely on zinc oxide tape and vaseline, and compeed when i forget the tape.

As per Cliff Thomas i've worn boots over many miles whilst carrying weight with little sign of blisters but thr occasional hot spot but when it came to running long distances i suffered quite badly and in essence it was one of many things i didn't do that caused them undiagnosed overpronation rectified by proper recommended specialist running shop footwear, talcing my feet before a run and new running socks (1000 miles)but i still occasionally suffer blisters and recommend Compeed for after treatment. Although is not certain that eveyone will get blisters whilst running i except it as being part of the price i pay for the enjoyment i get from the sport but i did find that tapeing my feet up before the Fleet Half marathon this year helped a lot, plenty of hot spots but no blisters some relief after 13 miles, suffered somewhat more on the pre training though. As per this link everyone has their remedies which work for them and may work for others so it's a matter of trial and error but do what i did when i first started running and listen to advice from older hands there's always good advice to be had from experienced runners it set me on a good running path. Train hard, run easier

Most blisters occured where the shoe is either too tight or too loose around the foot. So getting a shoe that fits your foot correctly is one of the most important things whne buying a shoe. All the manufacturers shoes are based around different lasts (shapes) and finding the one that is right for you is trial and error. But remember within these brands they will have different shaped shoes for different types of feet (i.e. flat, normal or high arched) so make sure you're picking the right one to start with.
Once you've got the shae right, get the support level right. Too much support can sometimes cause blisters in the arch and too little will often mean the foot is moving aroung too much and can get blisters just about anywhere!
Tips therefore would be to get your gait analysed and have a look at the video, if you can. Try on more than 1 pair of shoes in the category of support that suits your foot (preferably from different manufacturers). Don't be scared to try on 10 pairs of shoes! Above all don't leave the shop until you've found something which is comfortable on your feet! You are the only judge of this, so don't be swayed by a good deal or promotion in the store!
