I posted on the same issue with the Nimbus 10, Asics have definitely changed the heel cup in their latest shoes.
I've worn Nimbus for years, never a problem out of the box but the 10s were blister hell.
I've binned them after about 200 very painful miles, they never got any better. The padding in the heel cup doesn't seem to extend all the way to the sole, just the top half-inch or so, this was the problem for me.
Moved on to Nike Vomero (too cushioned for me) and now onto Nike Lunaracer - these might be perfect for me, going to try the Lunatrainer as well.

Also had terrible trouble with the 2008 version of Cumulus after previous versions being great. If it aint broke why fix it? I have had problems in my lower right calf, achilles and shin area and want to change to something else. Definitely feel a difference in the heel of the shoe.
Can anyone suggest something similar to the old version of Cumulus? I wear custom fitted orthotics and have been told by my pod that I land on the outside of my foot so I should probably stick with neutral shoes. Although that may be a whole other debate?
Any ideas or is it the usual advice to go to your local running shop and see how each one feels? Before I am asked, I will be seeking expert advice from a physio to sort out my lower leg problems after some helpful suggestions on the injury forum. My pod has been less than helpful.
