Hi,

Newbie here, looking to invest in decent shoes.  I went along to my local running shop who fitted me out with a pair of Asics Gel Cumulus IXs, relieving me of ninety quid in the process.  Now, looking on ebay I see you can get Cumulus VIIIs for a lot less money.  Should I buy them instead - is there any technical difference or does the number just refer to the year, season, colour or something like that?  The running shop did say I could return the shoes if I wasn't happy with them, and to be honest I'd rather not pay that sort of cash.

Thanks for any advice.

Take it on the chin as the cost of the right advice. It would be a bad show, not cricket, to take them back and buy the cheaper pair on eBay. You would be taking advantage. When you wear your current pair out, buy your next pair wherever your conscience says you should.

Technical differences, well three will be something. Read the reviews in the Gear section on this website.

Why don't you have a look in the gear review section and find the Cumulus under neutral cushioned shoes and see what runners have written about the uprades/changes from the VIIIs to the IXs?  There may not be much in it or it could be considerable improvement. It tends to vary....  Shoes continue to progress, sometimes people like the changes from one season to the next... sometimes they dont.

However there is another issue here.  In a shop you have face to face advice from an experienced member of staff.  Perhaps you've had a recommendation on your gait.  To return them and buy them cheaper online is a little unfair IMHO, as you've taken advantage of their advice and expertise and I think we need to support local running shops.  Once you no longer feel you need that advice and you know what you need you get them online.

have to agree with what my Welsh friends have said - you paid your money for good advice so have some loyalty to the shop you bought them from and keep them

I've run in Cumulus since about version V and so far they have all felt the same underfoot - some minor changes but for the better - the other changes are purely cosmetic. I'm about to get some IX's as I like to see how the evolution continues.........

Yep, I agree with the previous sentiments.  I assume you had some form of gait assessment and advice from the shop and that will be money well spent.  When you need a new pair you can go wherever you like. Personally, I prefer to support my local running shop cos it would be a terrible loss if these closed down due to lack of support (well, that and the fact that I get to snog the owner).

As to changes from one version to another -  sometimes these seem to be purely cosmetic and sometimes they are more significant. I would not want to switch to a different version without trying them first or at least knowing I could get my money back.
