Personally, I think the Nike Pegasus is the best neutral shoe on the market at the moment, and has been for a number of years. It's a great fitting shoe, well cushioned, and fairly light and responsive for a training shoe.
I had a pair of 2002 Wave Riders (I think it may have been the 6) and they were a good shoe except for the fact that the uppers went in less than a year. I currently have a pair of Precisions which are also very good, but would agree that Mizunos do tend to be on the firmer side. I've never had a pair of Asics Nimbus but did try a pair once and they felt okay but not as good as smooth the Pegasus.
