I'm confused about when to wear different shoes, obviously I know road running I wear my normal running shoes ... I've recently bought some off road shoes, because I've joined a club and they seem to do a lot of off road ... but how muddy, grassy does it have to be to warrant wearing them? is it okay to wear NORMAL shoes? what are fell shoes like, spikes etc confused ...

It's fine to wear your road shoes off-road. I do all the time. The only thing to be aware of is that they offer less grip so on slippy or very muddy paths you may find yourself slipping around.

to add to what Mr W says...

road shoes off-road are fine if the going is dry

fell shoes have generally a much more aggressive sole for grip on soft/loose surfaces and minimal support (not so much support needed on these surfaces)

trail shoes are like a cross between a road shoe and a fell shoe

spikes get used on short(er) XC races where the going is mud to boggy as you get even more grip with spikes - but completely useless if there is any tarmac involved.....
